Meucci wgt bolt question

This may be a stupid question, but I know I'm not the only one who has experienced this:

I have two (2) Meucci sticks; one is about 15 years old (played with a lot)and the other is about 20 years old (never played with--stick in orginal box). Here's the question/problem:

The type Meucci sticks I have have a wgt bolt with a flanged head at the butt of the stick. When removed, you can remove or add other wgt bolts. So, I wanted to lighten up one of them, so I removed the 1.5 oz wgt bolt with the flanged head. I found no other bolts and the stick weight out perfectly at 18.5 oz. I went off to play and when I made a firm shot, the butt section (section that the rubber is in about 1.5 inches long) fell off. Apparently the flange bolt held on the little piece. I glued it back on and all is fine.

Is this the way they were made? Will the butt of my other Meucci fall off if I take the flange bolt off? Is there a plastic flange bolt available?

Oh yeah, I called Meucci.....they were clueless. They had no answer. There only answer was to but the 1.5 oz bolt back in the stick. That would make the stick a 20oz. and I don't want that. The wgt bolts they are now using are not even the same size as the ones I have.

thanks,

I would just take the origional weight bolt and put it to the grinder. Have a scale close by. Done deal!!!

well, that right there says a lot,,,,,that they don't even friggin' know how they put together an old cue to know what went wrong.

most cue butts are slipped on over a core dowel, but it sounds like your meucci was built to save on the cost of said missing core. it doesn't even sound like the plastic butt was screwed on.

you're only going to have a problem if you don't have a replacement bolt. try looking for a similiar bolt made of aluminum which has virtually no weight.

Anybody can be clueless if you're talking to the wrong person that has no clue to begin with in any organization.

The older Meucci cues had a weight bolt that did serve a purpose besides alter the weight, and you just found out what that purpose is.

My best friend died a couple of years back and he owned a 1981 Meucci Original which his wife gave to me that had a badly cracked implex joint collar.
The cue was to light for my taste anyway, so I sent it to Meucci and had a nickel joint collar put on like the ones in their metallic series cues. When it came back, it was now heavier than hell and I was going to do the same thing that you're going through by removing the weight bolt and cutting it down.

Something didn't look right, so I called the RIGHT person in the repair dept. that DID KNOW and he told me NOT to do that or it was going to fall apart.
So I sent it back and they put in a special plastic weight bolt that literally weighs nothing (even lighter than aluminum) and presto chango....perfect.
You might want to consider doing likewise.

BTW...those old Meucci's from back then were well made and damn good cues.

I have also heard that the older Meucci cues are of good quality. However, I was disappointed when the technical service department of Meucci factory did not have an answer (I was transferred to 4 different people). I'm going to call them again today and ask for a plastic/alum bolt since I know they have actually sent one out. They suggested a hardware store the first time I called them.

Thanks for all the replies.

Yup. That's how they were made. And Meucci wasn't the only one doing it that way either. If there's a plastic flange bolt in that size, it would be custom I'd imagine. I would just cut down the bolt. However, there is a chance that a local cuemaker might have a shorter bolt.

Newer Meucci's have a threaded rod, like a big set screw (no flange). It's epoxied in place, so you (preferably a cue mechanic) have to do some heating to get it out.

Hello,

I have a Meucci Original that I was interested in lightening up about an oz. I called the Meucci's tech at the factory and was told that the butt bolt holds the butt end together and not to remove it or it would fall apart. According to him all Meucci's until recently have the weight adjustment added under the wrap. It is drilled in.

He informed me that the new Meucci's now have removable weight bolts.
