Mezz Sigma shafts are entry level with hardly any ferrule?

So it seems those wonderful WX 7/9!are approaching extinction. The AXI line is discontinued.

Their bread and butter entry level cues, EC9, are now default sigma shafts.

I don’t care much about low deflection but durability is my concern.

Should I be cincern?

-with hardly any ferrule will the shaft start to expand and split? Especially when chalking, buildup can occur and absorb into that area.

Anyone shoot with one?

Mezz is top quality and well made product. If you are worried then get your tip installer to drop in a pad.

That's what I did with mine before I sold it. I also use a pad on my KUH Fuhjin shaft. More for peace of mind when I replace the tip. I always worry I will fuck the ferrule up. Tip pad gives a little piece of mind.
Sigma is a nice shaft, I like the taper.

It probably a plug which means there's a stem going down into the shaft. There are a lot of that design in the field, haven't heard of any exploding yet. All cfs are that way, seen a lot of tsunamis that appear to be the same design.
Personally I like them.

Back in the day, I played Black Boar ferrule - less shafts and now play Milanesi ferrule - less shafts. None of them had/have pad. Maybe I have just been lucky, but never had a problem with them expanding or splitting. Of course I don't break with them.

So, I would think the Sigma shaft with a narrow ferrule wouldn't have any problems with expanding or splitting.

I played, and seen people play, with a lot of cues with tiny or no ferrules, as long as the person using them is a "player" and knows how to chalk and use the equipment, I have not seen an issue with any of them.

Based on the picture Mezz already supplied this shaft with a tip pad. As you mentioned, those Japanese cuemakers learned their trade deep to the bone, so no worries about damaging the shaft.

The only thing to really care about is informing the tip install guy of that pad. And asking to take extra effort not to remove too much of it when trying to get a perfectly flat area with a lathe.

One way to avoid touching the original pad is gluing another one on top of it . Doing this you couldn't care less whether the additional "security" pad gets sanded down. But be ready your shaft will feel quite a bit more stiff in terms of hit/feedback

If you drill a hole in the chalk it will wear a line into the wood. It is an eyesore more than anything. If you brush on the chalk and evenly wear it, or throw it away when there's only 30 cents of chalk left it's not really an issue.

The best shaft and cue I have ever owned. It honestly made me a better player. I should have bought a mezz a long time ago. My peers keep saying it’s my skill but I think it’s the cue.

I was always a good player but this cue took me to another level.

A few weeks of playing I think I have already figured this cue out.

Thinking about an ignite shaft but having too much fun with sigma. It makes playing pool enjoyable again.

I will still buy customs but will never use them competitively again.
