Micarta ferrule on a 314-2? Possible without losing the LD characteristics?

As the title says, is it possible to replace the stock 314-2 ferrule with a micarta one without losing much of the LD characteristics of the shaft?

Thanks in advance...

I think the answer will depend on the characteristic weight density of micarta vs. that of the Predator ferrule. Anybody has this info?

I am starting to believe that this might be possible:

Isoplast specific weight is between 1.19-1.51 g/cc (predator ferrule material)

Micarta (paper based phenolic resin): 1.36 g/cc

G10 (glass epoxy): 1.8 g/cc

Before the installation, micarta could be cut down to the exact weight of the Predator ferrule that is removed. I am seriously thinking about having this done, but would like to hear more opinions...

I've done it (on a non warranty shaft) with MasonH's yellow micarta. Deflection was maybe a touch higher, but the hit was improved IMO. I wouldn't suggest doing it to a perfectly good shaft unless you're willing to except that you will no longer have a predator warranty and you may not like the results.

Thanks for the advice! Are 2nd hand shafts considered to be under warranty? Nothing's wrong with my shaft, but I am thinking it'd be nice to improve the hit a little bit my replacing the ferrule.

I don't believe that the warranty only applies to the original owner, but I'm not positive. You can look at Predator's website to find the details. My suggestion would be to contact one of the fine cuemakers on this site and ask them to build you a low deflection shaft. Or try out a OB Classic shaft, they are supposed to have a stiffer feel to them.

I don't recommend messing with a perfectly good predator shaft.

I've played some with both. I definitely like the feel of the OB over the 314. The OB feels more like a regular one piece shaft.

Turns out the warranty applies to the original purchaser only. Still, I guess I won't modify the 314-2 just yet. I have had an OB Classic, and even though the hit is much stiffer, I didn't like the taper. I still have an OB CP that I keep in my case though (for 3C play, etc)...

I've done them.
Every time I have, the person liked it better than the original ferrule.

I play with 2 314-2 shafts that I replaced the ferrules with the Masonh micarta and they play great and with no noticible difference in deflection.- but no warranty-Leonard

no cuemaker but have experimented plenty!

I like the harder hit - some feel from replacing the (feeling less material. (pred ferrule) I have a micarta on a less deflection shaft, and had a Pred. with Ivory which was very nice too. People use micarta on Southwest too, ivory on southwest too. for a sharper feeeling hit. mark I put micarta on many differen't shafts!
