Mid '80's Joss, how to change weight bolt?

I have an old Joss that says 1984 on the joint. I want to make it lighter (it's 21 oz) but it seems to not have the current weight bolt system. I used an allen wrench to take off the rubber butt (the screw was not heavy). Underneath is a silver round disk with a large slot, like you would need a quarter or nickel to turn it. I tried turning it with a coin but it's very tight. Does anyone know about these? Is the weight changable and are the weights available?
If no one knows what I'm talking about I'll try to get pics up later.

that is the weight bolt! you need to get a large screwdriver that fits it and hold your cue tight in one hand and turn it out with your screwdriver.. be careful not to damage your cue.. once you get it out, you can weight it and shorten it or find a lighter bolt..

Yes, the bolt can be replaced. Assuming you want to substantially lighten the cue, it is best to replace with aluminum. I would advise against playing with a cue that is empty in that space. You should be able to get an aluminum bolt from Joss. E-mail them at info@josscues.com. Dan was very helpful when I lightened my 1985 Joss. If you have trouble removing the bolt, you could always mail it to them.

It is worth the effort to fit the old butt to your current preferences. A link to mine is enclosed. Every part is perfectly straight.

Thanks for the link Sealegs. I sent them an email. Mine looks like yours except it has a darker finish.
I saw on an online dealer that the weight bolts look like a screw with no head. That's not what mine looks like-I still haven't gotten it loose, but its a large round slotted silver screwhead. I'm trying to post a pic but my post count is too low.
 
Wow, Dan got back to me fast. He says to mail it to him with the shaft(s) because if I'd gotten it out it could have messed up the alignment on it-I don't know what that means. I wish I could just send the butt-is it because it has to be balanced? I have two shafts but I would think one is enough right? I hate subjecting the shafts to the hazards of UPS or USPS. I guess it's worth it for a better playing cue though.
 
Some of those Joss weight bolts are so hard to get out...I won't even mess with them anymore. Joss isn't too far from me so I would just let Dan mess with it.
 
If he asked for your shaft, you should send him both, just pack them well and they'll be OK.

Before you send them, decide if you want new tips on those shafts and Dan can do it at the same time for a small fee....

Send him the butt and shafts if that is what he is asking for. It won't cost more than an extra couple of dollars. Refer to this recently posted thread by Joe Van on packaging. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=291828
 
Good move on both accounts. Great to see an old Joss brought back to active service. They still are excellent cues. Also, good decision to follow Dan's advice. He is a great guy and is only doing this because of his dedication to his original purpose in establishing Joss Cues.

You will be happy you did this. Have fun with your "new" cue.
