Mike Sigel

Tim, I might agree that Sigel was in the top 3 of HIS time, but he can't compete with the likes of the top 3 of ALL TIME as some have claimed. Caras, Mosconi, Strickland, Reyes, Archer, and others clearly outrank him. HE probably thinks HE is the best ever, which goes a long way to convincing others. The fact is that every poolhall has some guy who THINKS that he can beat the world because of a swollen ego - Sigel just happens to be the guy who got his 15 and a half minutes in the limelight and ran away afterward.

Unless I'm mistaken, Mike has won so many tournements that he was put in the hall of fame years ago (same thing with Nick Varner). Why should he practice all day just to compete with Efren, Earl, Francisco,etc.. if he can make more money elsewhere? Some people may not like his attitude sometimes but I think the old timers are more interesting to watch and listen to then most of todays players.

This is the same old story of could the 32 yankees beat the teams of today. Sigel is and was a great player...........In the top 15 of all time, but not top 3. You can't dismiss what he has done because of his personality. Back in the day he was the MAN! That is till THE PEARL started running over everybody. Then the Efrens and Paricas started making balls for weeks at a time. And so on....... I would rank Sigel in the top 15 for sure but towards the end.

Occasionally one will come up on ebay also. All of the ones I've seen were pretty ornate, lots of malachite and ivory inlays. I don't recall ever seeing any with spliced/veneered points.

I own a cue from the original lot you are referring to. Mine has Azurite inlays.

Fast, yes he does have an ego, but it is worth sitting back and listening. He does build the cues himself in his shop in the back of the store. Kind of cramped back there but it is enough to move around.

sigel

I was once a big fan of Mike Sigel. This was years ago when I was learning the game. I had his videos etc and had read a tremendous amount of pool billiards historical items. I only met Sigel one time and that was plenty for me. His achievments are unmatched but the personality is lacking. I was at Super Billiards expo in Valley Forge, Pa a few years ago. I had some photos I had taken and developed in my darkroom (some real nice black & whites of men and women pros). Everyone and I mean everyone signed there photos at VF that weekend. Everyone that is with the exception of Mike Sigel. I walked up up and politely introduced myself. I called him Mr. Sigel and asked if he would sign my photo. He instantly respondly very rudely that he would not sign it but would gladly sell me one of his 8x10s for a price that I have since forgotten. Very talented, very rude. I went home and sold all the Sigel videos on e-bay.

Not in the top 3?...................come on now!

> I have followed Mike Sigel's career since the mid-80's. I have also read everything I can find on the game in general since then. Mike's list of titles is more impressive every time I look at it. Looking at it from a purely statistical point of view,he is clearly the most dominant player EVER,102 pieces of evidence and counting, considering he is supposedly contemplating playing in a few Senior events as soon as he's eligible. Mosconi,Crane, and Greenleaf may have beaten him head to head in their prime, but none of them had to like playing him,and rest assured he would leave them all shaking their heads at times. Tommy D.
