Milk Duds....

for sale!
Got my first chance to play with a milk dud. (Elk Master soaked in milk then compressed) Brain King here in Huntsville area built me another shaft for a cue I got off him and I must say so far so good. I can say it hits and plays as good as anything I've played with. The shaft plays great anyways but the tip does play well as I've been told by others. I feel I may repeat use.

I had my first experience with the infamous "milkdud" tip with John Sherlock a new customer I just recently built a custom fitted cue for, and a frequent Az'r at that....

He sent me the "milkdud" and I was a little surprised at how little there was to it after the milk cure.... but after I installed it on his shaft and trimmed it down to size it puffed up a wee bit and gave a sufficent but not abundant height of tip...

To my understanding these tips require little if no maintenance and play quite well... and to my knowlege they originate from louisiana, which is very common for buttermilk to be used for just about everything in their culinary applications so I guess it was just a matter of time before a tip fell into the mix as well ! lol....

But seriously, what a huge difference in the machining characteristics... it had more of the triangle properties than the original Elkmaster for sure !

I have yet to hit with it but since I am currently tweaking Mr. Sherlock's cue I will hit a few balls with it so I will have first hand knowlege of the "milkduds" playability !!!

By the way... I'm sure the owner won't mind if test drive the equipment before I return it..... shhhhhh !!!!!

Sincerely, Eddie Wheat

Get ready for a seriously good playing tip.

One thing I've found when making milk duds is that the way to go with them is to start with a 14 mm tip, as its dome is higher, and thus, after soaking in milk and compressing it, will probably be a bit thicker. I know mine have.

Another thing when making them is to not compress them too much. What I do is use a 2 1/2 inch C clamp (from Home Depot) and tighten it as much as my hand will allow, and then back off it slightly. Putting a tip in a large bench vise and really cranking the sucker down might not be what the doctor ordered.

Can other than Elkmasters be used ? Say a lepro, triangle, etc ?? Has anyone tried it with a layered ?

I tried it with a LePro, achieved similar results to the Elkmaster, although the LePro is coated with something, and you'll need to scuff it thoroughly all over to get the milk to penetrate the tip. With a layered, expect to see massive delamination...

with some layered tips you would get a bowl of Corn Flakes when they came unglued.

A buddy of mine did it with Triangles and had some good results

If you have several regular tips and want to find out how it works, just do it.

I bet they'll all be pretty good.

The Milk Dud tip is the best tip that I have ever hit with.....Period!!! It gives me good feed back and It feels like a hard tip but grips the ball like a soft which makes it great for One Pocket. I have yet see it mushroom or even need scuffing up....Have fun.
