Milling machine question?

I need to know how much table travel I need for my milling machine. I am looking at a few but the one I like in my budget is this one http://www.grizzly.com/products/G3103

It only has a longitude travel of 15 5/8 ". The table size is 6 1/8 x26 ". Will this work or should I get one with more travel.

I finaly made room for some more machines and I want the milling machine to be the first new addition.

Thanks

I bought this one:

A little bit less money and has all the travel I need. I almost went with a smaller model with 12 inches of Travel, but was told to get one with at least 14 and this one actually has 24.

Make sure you get one with a power feeder, I couldn't imagine having to crank that thing all day.

Either will work fine for cue work and making most jigs. The Mill is easier to adjust for different height of material such as when using a vise and not but it also costs quite a bit more. I have the mill/drill myself although my travel is only 17.5" on mine instead of 24". I've not found anything that I need done that I can't accomplish on it. I got mine at a H/F store on sale and on/off switch broke for 500.00 though. I had to buy the power feed extra. I f you have the room and a way of moving, you can find many used full size mills much cheaper than you are now spending. All of the machine shops are going to CNC and the manual machines have become obsolete. I've seen Bridgeports go for as little as 800.00 and other mills even cheaper.

Depends on your intended use and space for using it. BUT.... You can never have too much travel on your mill. If your thinking of spending 2500-3000 dollars for one your better to get one that has 4200 or higher rpms on the head and one that the head will will cant at 45 degrees for knifing in points. I know you have a budget but don't scrimp on this one.
IMO..better to go used and larger than new and smaller. Don't worry about the 110v....you can put a converter on your 220 single for cheap.
I believe the larger one will hold their resale better also. You'll appreciate it much more down the line.

Good luck mill hunting.......

<~~~ shopping for tools and machines is half the fun...........

Milling Machines

Hi: LosOsosCues:

Try looking at the Grizzley G9959 wood mill. It is basically a floor model, knee type machine with an oversize table and higher speeds for cutting wood. I have one and it works great for all wood milling as well as for metal. About $2800.

PS: Los Osos is a great place--used to own land there.

MIlling machine questions.

RPM's are important. I have looked at the grizzley wood mill and it looks good for cutting points. For making tooling a Bridgeport type mill is better, but usually is a little slow on rpm's. I get over this by doing what Dave said, crank it over 45 and use a shell mill. Pain in the butt to set up, but the shearing action causes less vibration than the double angle cutter. Think of this as a 30 year investment, don't skimp.
If you go to my shop page, you can see the set up for cutting at 45 angle
