Well, today we'll see who wins the Valley Forge 9-Ball tournament. Four players qualified for the final day's matches (Orcollo, Deuel, Bustamante, and Van Boening) based on the total number of wins they accrued in 6 preliminary rounds of 25 games each.
But it appears that two of the 12 players simply were not competitive with the other 10, at least not this week -- Broxmeyer and Krah. But only 6 of the other 10 players had the "good fortune" to play either or both of Broxmeyer/Krah. Four players (Bustamante, Van Boening, Hatch, and Archer) did not get to play either of them.
So what were the results for the top 10 players just among themselves, i.e., eliminating the matches with Broxmeyer and Krah? Here are the results:
1. 57.3% for Bustamante -- 86 wins in 150 games
2. 56.8% for Ocollo -- 71 wins in 125 games
3. 55.3% for Van Boening -- 83 wins in 150 games
4. 52.0% for Deuel -- 65 wins in 125 games
4. 52.0% for Hatch -- 78 wins in 150 games
6. 48.0% for Archer -- 72 wins in 150 games
7. 44.0% for Manalo -- 44 wins in 100 games
8. 43.0% for Peach -- 43 wins in 100 games
9. 42.0% for Chohan -- 42 wins in 100 games
10. 41.0% for Moore -- 41 wins in 100 games
Observations:
-- There was a lot of talk about how much better Orcollo was than anyone else. In fact, his 22 games won against Broxmeyer in the first round, when Broxmeyer was probably at his most nervous, is what gave Orcollo such a commanding overall lead with 93 games won. Bustamante, Orcollo, and Van Boening had quite similar win percentages when Broxmeyer and Krah are removed from the statistics.
-- Archer moves up from 10th to 6th with my numbers. Even with that, though, I think he had a sub-par week. I expected him to be in the final four.
-- Hatch was 7th in the actual results, but played neither of Broxmeyer/Krah, and tied for 4th in my numbers above.
-- The presence of substantially weaker players in a field like this can have a significant effect on the results, although in this case the actual final four were certainly all "deserving."
