Missed shots = FUN

I have watched in amazement as team mates show anger after missing a shot they thought they should have made. They forget that missing is what creates the a directional oppertunity for improvement in a skill set, teaches us how and where to best apply practace time, and (best of all) fun.

On the few times I have reminded them of these "rules of pool" they can't see the fun part. (The other two parts are obvious, are they not?) Let me explain and then you tell me if in fact I am a "nut". If I were to arrange you and I play 8-ball for $20.00 a game. You get all the brakes, choose stripes or solids after each brake, get b-i-h to start every shot, and get one "oops" (take Q from me and shoot with b-i-h) per game.

The result will be, you will make a lot of money. You will go the table each day and make about $5,000.00. You will do that until you retire to the islands but, it will be work. Once past the 1st. year and at the end of 30 years or so, I don't think the odds are good that you went to the pool hall with friends "to have fun". Pool "as a fun thing to do" will have been lost. It may have been a good deal to trade your fun hobby for lots of money but, fun was still lost.

I am not going to make that game, so be sure you are not trading the oppertunity to get better for the fun of the world's greatest game ever.

Good luck and hit them ever softer.

tell them to read

The Inner Game of Tennis

it goes over all those issues and then some, being great at the game is more about how you perform mentally than how you physically perform, its mind over matter.....if your minds not right then what you do physically wont matter!

I don't know as I would go so far as to say that missing shots is fun, but I do agree that there can be a positive response to missing, if we accept missing them as a learning opportunity. Learning is positive. The results of learning can be fun, but I still hate to miss!!!!!!!

I will play much better, when I am enjoying the moment and relaxing in the game.If i tighten with anger, fear,or negative thoughts i am doomed. It;s only a game.
