MANILA, Philippines -- If preparation is the key to winning the 2007 World Pool Championship, the formidable Taiwanese delegation may have gotten a headstart, planing into the country last week and sharpening their skills in their hotel for the event that starts Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
?They?ve been here, at least more than a week ago,? defending champion Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net, Thursday in Filipino. ?They are playing in so many money games in their hotels, which has taken a World Pool atmosphere.?
Alcano leads the formidable Philippine charge in the $400,000 event and the 35-year-old, who won the title over Germany?s Ralf Souquet last year, reiterated that if it is not a Filipino who will win, it will be a Taiwanese, like teen star Wu Chia-ching.
Efren ?The Magician? Reyes, Francisco ?Django? Bustamante and 2004 winner Alex Pagulayan are also there for the Philippine cause, though Alcano had said that it is Dennis Orcollo who seems to be the best local bet thus far.
?He (Orcollo) has been making so much money against the foreigners lately (in the hotels),? Alcano said with a laugh. ?Dennis is a prime bet to go far in the tournament.?
There will be a total of 45 countries to be represented in the tournament that stakes $100,000 to the winner and the United States, led by the temperamental Earl Strickland, and former champion Johnny Archer, has the most entries with 15.
The field of 128 players will be divided into 16 groups of eight players each using the double elimination format with a race-to-9 affair, winners breaking.
It will be a unique elimination since two straight wins will make the player advance to the round-of-64, while two straight losses take them to the showers regardless of the outcome of their other matches.
The final set of matches in the group will feature players with one win and one defeat with winners advancing and the losers eliminated.
