Monthly memberships at pool halls

After reading the thread about Hollywood Billiards and how it costs $8-20 per hour to play, I was wondering how anyone can make that their regular pool hall to practice at. Most serious pool players I know can't afford to pay that when they're trying to work on their game and need to play a few hours a day. The best deals I know of are monthly memberships. In California, you can pay $60 a month at College Billiards in San Diego and play weekdays until 6; Buffalo Billiards in Cotati charges only $35 a month and you can play until 7, seven days a week. Even pricey Monterey has a pool hall (Easy Street) you can pay $75 a month to play unlimited hours at. I know owners need to make money but most of the pricey pool halls I've been to are mostly empty during the day and packed only on Fri and Sat nights. Players reading this might want to suggest this to their local pool hall management- either a monthly membership or a daily "green fee" for 5-10 bucks type of deal. Beats playing four hours a week, paying forty bucks to barely keep in stroke...

Hollywood Billiards has a sign as you enter that states that a $75.00 monthly is available but I didn't inquire about the details.
Mr. Luckys in Torrance, CA has $50.00 monthly from 12:00 PM open until the place gets crowded around 9:00PM or later.
Gardena Bowl has a $55.00 monthly from 8:00 AM til 6:30 PM daily.
Hard Times in Bellflower, CA has a $50.00+ monthly that starts at 11:00 PM til 5:00 PM daily.

A friend of mine pays a poolhall owner in Eugene Oregon $50/mo to play all that he wants. To me that is just insane for a room owner to do that. I know he plays 100+ hours a month. If he charged the normal rate it would be around $400. The owner should just give like half off table time for dedicated players who keep the table 3 or more hours or something.

I play in Sacramento and there are several pool halls here that charge about $70 a month. The place that I frequent the most charges you time if you're gambling. Other places have different rules that make the members start paying when it's busy or there are no other tables available, etc. It seems like it works out well for the players and owners. Nothing makes an owner more nervous than an empty room. Besides, it's like priming a pump, if someone is in the pool hall, there is a better chance that others will come in. When the place is completely empty, a lot of people will not go in or stay.
