** Mosconi Cup is a Joke ? - What do you think **

I was at work and didn't check the final score.
To Joe: Yes it does suck when we can't get a W, but that can change I hope. Let's keep it the same for now.

To Nvyus: Population is irrelevant for some sports in the Olympics because the athletes are paid to practice and play by the country. Probably when billiards is added to the Olympics the same will be true.

You are probably joking about pool in the oympics...however in case you aren't, remember that even a physically active sport like wrestling barely was able to remain in the olympics. Pool isn't getting in....ever.

of course population is still relevant, with a bigger population = bigger talent pool which makes it more likely you will find that one extraordinary athlete

I don't recall any of these cry baby sentiments when the USA owned the cup. As Europe do now. Personally I don't really care who wins it I just want to see lots of good pool. The last two years have been an embarrassment. I was there tonight rooting for Shane as I wanted a few more matches. He didn't get the best of luck against Darren, who was clinical. The ball he missed in the second game was very careless.

If that team is the best that USA can send, there's no point. I think there are better teams available and I think the humiliation of a nights play being held up to try to save the last days play is one of the most belittling things I have ever seen in sport.

I would love to go to Vegas next year but if USA can't show that they can field a team to win, or at least compete, I will not be spending my money to watchEurope win at a canter without getting out of second gear.

1) Europe discovered that softer shoots into the rails vs shooting firm straight to the pocket paid dividends early on.
2) Bergman I think was a bad choice Mike D even with attitude is a much better choice.+ He couldn't wine about the rack just shoot. ( Not meant to be a knock on Justin but just a few more years and maybe)
3) As we all that watched saw Shane never got in a grove other than a few balls worth. Really to bad because I love watching him shoot, but he was so down on himself and never got the I THE MAN TO BEAT feeling.

USA never seemed to get good control of whitey..

GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR USA!

Pool was America's game...they introduced it to the World during WWII to both the Europeans and the Asians and now like everything else (manufacturing, etc) they out play us. Why is everyone surprised???

They will bounce back, no doubt. And they have the right man in Mark.

Anyone that doesn't see that is missing the big picture....any time a team loses decisively, there will always be second guessing... especially in the AZB jungle.

:bash:

I think the format is GREAT......now we just need to somehow get our guys to step up and get in there and play like we all know they can !!!!!!!!!!!

Terrible lags, shitty breaks, routine misses and scratches, kick/safe misses, you name it. Nerves seemed shot.

The Europeans gave our guys plenty of chances to keep this one close, but we didn't rise to the occasion and get it done. :(

There are way more pool players in the US than in Europe.

One English poster estimated that just 1,000 people in England play nine ball, and yet a Team England of:Appleton, Boyes, Melling, Peach, and Gray would likely be slightly favored over any Team USA. We've got seven times the population of England and probably have over 1,000 times more nine ball players.

There's more to it than population.

You're right, there's much more to it than just population. There's a completely different approach to playing pool in Europe vs. in the USA. When I compare my former German league team (non-handicapped regional Bavarian league) to my APA handicapped league, it's a completely different class of "average" player.

The combination of non-handicapped, nationally sanctioned club system leagues, greater population density, and the close proximity of large towns and cities in Europe all work together towards fostering a pool culture that centers around pool and billiards as a sport. IMHO, that culture is what ultimately breeds pros and world champions. Our pool culture here in the States breeds gamblers or gambler wannabes, more than anything.

I think the Mosconi cup is a great event. Personally, I'd love to see it expanded to include more teams, with sessions held quarterly or monthly where teams play each other round-robin style throughout the course of the year, with the two best teams competing in finals at year end. Then maybe the silver medal would actually mean something...

Hi Guys,

Haven't had much chance to watch the stream this week. Turned it on at 2:20 PM just in time to watch the best (or one of the best) player in the world mis-play two shots. Stunned was my reaction. Sat for another moment or two and then turned it off. No wonder Team USA can not win. Our best player crumbled under the pressure. Oh well, there is always next year.

So, does anyone want to boot Shane off the team today   ?

Lyn
