Mosconi Cup Side Pockets

I'm 73 and have been playing pool since I was 10 in various parts of the country and I have never once seen side pockets like those in this year's Mosconi Cup. The facing angles were backwards. Can some of you pool table physicists shed some light on those pockets? Thanks.

Because the pockets are smaller the angle of the facing has to change to less angle. Balls will go in easier from an angle, but the distance between the 2 points of the rail get alot smaller.

Diamonds have the same facing angle.

They looked normal - just closer together.
Agreed, the facing angles were certainly not backwards. Due to the tighter pockets, the facings overlapped the pocket liners which is what I believe he’s referring to, but the pocket facing angles were unaltered, just tighter.

Same case for the corner pockets where the facings were overlapping the pocket liners, which looks unusual for those that are not familiar with seeing tables in which the pocket sizes have been significantly reduced.

It made for a very interesting Mosconi cup; Earl was correct when he said if these guy's think they are going to make every
ball they are fools. The 4" / 4 1/2 side was actually good, nobody is going to run away with the cup. It's much more anyone's game.

I spoke to Oscar about them for a few minutes after day 2. They were treacherous at best he said. The tittys just stuck out and if you touched them you miss. Which is why many patterns were played to the corners avoiding the side pockets. They were avoiding them when possible-who wouldn’t?

I noticed Earl missed a bank in the team vs team match (I think) was super early on the first day. It doubled out titty titty to the middle of the table. He hit it hard and I was surprised it didn’t go in-a forced in ball (for lack of a better word) pushing the facing and going in-that’s what it looked like could have happened. Maybe he missed it by more than I thought. Maybe they were tough points. This is why I asked Oscar the 2nd day when I had a chance to. I didn’t get to the table to look at them myself.

By the end of the first day I noted that 3 additional shots caught the just point and didn’t go in. Oscar confirmed what I pieced together. They were just too brutal. There was no pocket there sometimes to shoot at. Earl cut a ball down the rail to come across table for shape missing a difficult cut. The side pocket wouldn’t take that ball with any speed. Any normal one would have taken that ball. Was on day 2 I believed that happened.

Had I went yesterday I would have walked up to the table at some point afterwards and looked carefully and taken pics-that was my plan. I’ve taken pics of other Mcup pockets in the past(I think they are gone now-maybe in the cloud but not on my phone)

Overall the table was good I thought. No roll offs, pocket pics would have been cool

There is one overhead photo of one of the side pockets in an earlier post here, but I have not seen one of a corner pocket. I asked my buddy who was there to try to get an overhead closeup of a corner pocket when the matches were over one day, but I don’t believe he was able to.

It was impossible to get to the table this year. Afterwards was my plan and I didn’t go the last day. There was loads more security there than normal

Oops. Sorry for my mistake. Just saw a clear photo of side pockets and of course the pocket facings aren't backwards. I need a bigger TV. They still look very funky right?

Pocket facings overlap the pocket liners which certainly looks different for those who have never seen or played on pockets less than 4 1/2” corners and 5” sides, creating a smaller opening, but the angles are unchanged.

I notice on most 4 1/2" and smaller tables if you hit a ball with pace and even just graze a rail the ball will usually rattle between both jaws and then get spit out. Is that what happened with Earls bank shot??

It hit the points and went across table. Doubled out a million miles a hour. Looked like it could have hit the tit and went in-I didn’t see a replay so maybe my judgment is off.

It was enough to me take note the sides were super tight. That was the first side pocket miss and I noted those pockets were tough.

I saw 4 balls missed in the sides day one

Just looking for a simple yes/no answer Dan, would you be willing
to play Jayson Yes/no. Just curious

I see, I thought you were talking about a ball shot into a corner, now my reply makes no sense, thanks a lot!!! :):):)

It was a gaff table imo. The pockets were too tight, no shelf.

On a positive note it sure did roll nice. I didn’t see any ball roll off once.
