Mosconi v Moore

I turned on ESPN2 today to my amazement there was Mosconi v Moore playing and a very young Allen Hopkins narrating the event. The show was named "Classic Billiards" and was taped at Harrah's in Atlantic City.

Here is my question, what year was this taped in? It looked to be in the late 70's early 80's.

I hope that it is on again soon. It certainly is not the players at their best, but it is a true gem to see them play once again.

Those times are Eastern. Viewers shoul adjust your time zone schedules accordingly. The Romanos live in Illinois, and I live in Montana.

Classic Billiards

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Classic Matches ...

Willie was 68 when they played, and Cowboy Jimmy Moore was 71.

I thought it was interesting that when Jimmy Moore beat Lassiter, he just ran over him, and then the same thing happened to him when playing Mosconi.
His match against Lassiter though was almost picture perfect...

Just goes to show you, that even all the great names in Pool really did miss shots too, some that you would think they never should miss ...

I had the pleasure of playing Mosconi in an exhibition game of straight pool at the Billiard Tavern in San Diego in 1969. I had won a pretty good tournament there, and that was part of my prizes. He beat me 150 to 117, but I did have a 77 ball run, so I didn't feel too bad ... All this on a $10,000 table with inlaid ivory, a $3,500 chandilier above, and a stadium spectator section. The Billiard Tavern was ahead of its time with 33 tables, 4 private rooms for playing, closed circuit TV all over including one on the outside facing the street, indoor fountain by the bar area which served food and drinks, all carpeted, and a real nice place back then.

This was kind of an ironic event in my family, since my brother had won the snooker championship at KU, and got to play Mosconi in an exhibition game also a few years earlier.
