I have received a few PMs asking about using a windshield wiper motor and I figure it's easier to post a thread showing some pics. Feel free to add your own ideas/mounts etc.
I have bought these motors off ebay, but a junkyard is a playland. I try to get the ones that have only 2 wire hookups, as these are easier to wire up. On my Atlas lathe, for the leadscrew, I used a ATX computer power supply I had laying around and jumped the green sense pin to ground to get it to turn on. It supplies 12 VDC at about 16 amps peak. I am using a cheap china made PWM variable motor controller from ebay to control the speed and I installed it into a box I had with a reverse switch and CPU fan to provide additional cooling as I use it for all my tapering powerfeed. The motor was from a Jeep. I had to machine adaptors to get the motor to adapt to the pulleys, so choose the motor with a threaded stud if possible. The pulleys are 1:1 but may change to a 3:1 in the future to boost the speed. The spray booth motor was tougher, as it had a bunch of connections that I had to figure out, but it works good now. Both motors get warm, but not hot with long useage time. These motors are built for it.
