Since Ronnie Alcano's recent World Pool Championthip title win, his popularity is rising high. Somebody e-mailed me a link which indicates that there may be a movie on the horizon about Ronnie's life story.

I remember Ronnie when he first came to American shores and was traveling the Joss tournament trail. He was a force to be reckoned with on a field of green, and in person, he was quite humble, very polite, and so very nice. Last time I saw him was in Vegas at the IPT, and the first thing he did when he saw me was walk over and give me a hug. I always did like this kid, and he's sure come a long way!

I cannot understand the language on this link, but it seems to show the actor who will portray Ronnie Alcano in the movie about his life.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUDFY0lfsmo

The first time I ever saw Ronnie Alcano shoot was at a Joss tournament in Quincy, Massachusetts, in December of 2001.

I managed to snap me a picture of the future world champion, shown here with Keith and Jose Parica. :p

Actually it's a made for TV weekly series about people from all walks of life,
the famous and the unknown making good in life. It's basically a feel good
story that usually is an hour long and Vhong Navarro, an actor will play
Ronnie's part. The Tagalog part was spoken by Vhong as Ronnie that his
dad told him to work hard in whatever endeavor he decides to do and if it's
pool for him, then he must strive hard to be the best at it.

Thank you for the picture Jennie. DO you remember how many Joss
Tournament did Ronnie won that year (2001)? I heard it was a record!

I do not know how many Joss events Ronnie did win, but I do know that he was voted as the Joss Player of the Year because, in fact, he was literally unstoppable.

Which reminds me of a Joss tournament that Keith and I went to in this same era, when Ronnie was first making his mark on American soil.

It was held Ultimate Billiards in Berlin, Connecticut. The pool room was fairly new, and the tables had this strange blue cloth which was faster than what most players were used to. The name of it begins with a "G," if memory serves me right. If you just tapped a ball, it would roll and roll and roll. Believe me, nobody was liking this cloth one bit! :D

One trait that separates players like Ronnie from the rest of 'em is their ability to adapt to any environment quickly, no matter what the equipment. This is a trait that comes easy to players enjoy games of stake.

So the tournament progresses, and my horse in the race, Keith, was one of those players who had no problem adjusting to this bizarre blue cloth. Everybody else was singing the blues [pun intended]! :p

Everybody except Ronnie, that is. Keith was on a rampage to the finals, and as luck would have it, he ended up having to face this new Filipino by the name of Ronnie Alcano in order for him to snatch the almighty win. I was biting my nails, sitting on the rail, because I knew Ronnie was no slouch. ;)

All the spectators, players, and railbirds began to jockey for position to get a good seat. There was about a 30-minute intermission so folks could get settled and, of course, the side bets were mounting up big time, with the majority of money bet on Ronnie Alcano, which really made me nervous and uncomfortable. :(

Keith, on the other hand, was yucking it up with his buddies and didn't seem to let this pressure affect him. I pulled him aside before the match and said, "Keith, I'm really scared of this kid. You better take him seriously and start concentrating. This is Ronnie Alcano, the Filipino who's been winning all the Joss tournaments. Please remember who you're playing here," to which he replied in typical Keith fashion, "You better remember that Ronnie's gotta play me."

I was still one very Nervous Nellie when the race to 9 began, and I will never forget it. This weekend, the pool gods decided to smile on Keith, and he defeated Ronnie, 9-zip in less than 15 minutes. It was remarkable for Team McCready, and it's one win that I will always remember. :)

Ronnie Alcano went on this season to capture more Joss wins than any other player on tour, and soon after there wasn't a pool player in the States who didn't know who Ronnie Alcano was! :D

Here's a picture of Keith and Ronnie holding their beautiful trophies presented to them by owner of Ultimate Billiards, Pete Genovese, who's a pretty good player himself!

Thanks for the memories! :p

I only wish I could have been in the Philippines to see Ronnie Alcano win the 2006 World Pool Championship. I would have found myself a spot on the rail, up front and close, and pulling him in. I cannot think of anyone more deserving than Ronnie. He's truly a very, very, very nice guy, and, of course, the man can play!

You wouldn't believe it but I lost my voice shouting when he won it all. I was
all but broke and with Christmas just around the corner, I placed a buck on
Ronnie to win it all. And it paid off! Stan James send 5 large as Ronnie's
odds was 50 to 1 and my kids' Christmas wasn't cancelled!

Wow. That is so very cool! :)

Stan James maybe should get a new bookie consultant if they put Ronnie at 50 to 1.

Another notable in the group, tied for 13th, is an 18 yr. old Nick Schulman. It was around this time he made the wise decision to take up poker. He went on to win a World Series event with a payout to him of over $2,000,000

Wow, I had no idea he was that young at that time. He always reminded me of that Yankee's pitcher, Andy Pettitte. :p

Here's a picture I took of young Nick the very same weekend of the Joss tournament I referenced above.

Thanks for the story and the pictures JAM. Brought back some old memories of when Ronnie first made a name for himself on the pool scene.

But I love Keith's line, "but he's gotta play ME". I love it. That is what makes Keith so cool. And to follow it up with a 9:0 - ouch.
