Mud Balls?

This is the reason why I considered all of the sets I have seen on ebay (when I was watching) as incomplete.
In addition to "weird" colors, there appears to be differences in the "fonts" or "numbering" style.

I have not had a full cup of coffee yet, so I'll spare you folks with any stupid/obnoxious jokes about my theory as to the red nine ball, blue five ball, etc..

Remember how television "got involved", and changed "my" purple 4/12 ball to pink, and maroon 7/15 to brown? So viewers would be able to distinguish them from the other balls? Perhaps the aforementioned older color change, allowed them to show up better in etchings. (badda-bang, badda-boom, DOH, could not resist) (sips coffee)

I grew up playing with clay balls at home. During my college years I went into an old pool room in Murphysboro IL, they had dark purple cloth and clay balls, but what was unusual, around each ball number there was a pointed border, like a star with 16 points or more, I did notice that allot of the balls had chunks out of em in this area, never saw another set like em, wonder who made that set? I'd bet Jay wouldn't even know, and he's as old as clay
