Last night I managed to string three 9-ball racks, back to back! What is your best run?

If you can run 2's and 3's, the only thing that's stopping you from running 5 and 6 packs is your break. Once you get your game to a certain level where an open shot spells a won game for you, start paying attention to the rack; learn where to break from, and most importantly, try to keep the CB in the center of the table. I don't think there is a player in the world who can out-shoot Efren on one of his good days, but there are many who break better than him, and that's usually why anyone beats him.

My record is 10 racks of 9 ball on a 9" table
4 racks of 10 ball (nothin special)

on a bar box its 14 racks of 9 ball (for the win in a race to 21)

Pro - Great point. I have been working on my break a bit myself, and don't quite have it nailed down yet. I would love to hear your thoughts on a 9ball break.

Thanks!

My thoughts on a 9-ball break....

If anyone ever tries to teach you a "power break" don't listen to them. The break is all about speed, not power.

Try not to listen to those chumps who tell you to sway your body back and forth in your practice strokes, all that's gonna accomplish is the most top-spin you've ever seen.

You can't throw a decent punch with a clenched fist and a tightened bicep on your swing. You should clench your fist and flex your bicep right before impact to throw your strongest punch. Same thing applies to the 9-ball break, no tension until that millisecond before impact, let everything go fast and loose before then.

Also- don't forget to pick a spot on the 1-ball and aim at it, sometimes I catch myself just aiming in the general direction of the 1-ball, and realize thats why my cueball dances around the table after the break.

Oh one more thing, you may also want to experiment with not dropping your elbow on the break, some do, some don't, see what works for you.

i use the soft break when playing 9-ball, i am spreading the balls farther with this one. most of the time. the wingball drops down. but i am still inconsistent with breaking, the most no. of balls i pocketed on a break is only 3.
well, in any kind of game, i break in the middle, dead straight on the 1-ball, a little bit of low english, and medium stroke...i think...:D
well, my break is inconsistent atm. when i properly execute my break, the ball draws a little after hitting the 1-ball avoiding any collision to any other ball. well, sometimes, the cb draws back into the kitchen and i am really messed up...:D

Pro-Player - Thanks for the thoughts, I will try to wrok that in. How would you describe what the cb is doing? I guess I imagine the perfect break one where the cb 'skids' squarly into the rack without any english, jumps back about 2 feet into the middle of the table, and dies. That is of course my imagination... Any comments Pro?

What you said is a pretty good break. If you are playing on tables where you can't seem to get the wing balls to fall, practice pocketing the 1 in the side with a cut break, problem is it's tough to control the CB that way.

Excellent tip regarding taking dead aim on the one ball when
breaking.

It is the small things that add up in pool.
