This might not be much for most of you, but it's a personal best for me and such I'm going to share it here where people will understand and appreciate it. My normal social circle doesn't understand pool, or tournaments, or the lingo. :/

I played in a midnight tournament this weekend and I finished 3rd out of 16 players. It was a double-elimination and after losing my 2nd match, I won 4 straight to play for 2nd/3rd. It was 5am when we finished and I was apparently just too tired to play and I lost horribly But in my only defense, the guy that beat me double-dipped the hotseat winner to win the whole thing.

If you're interested, my details of the tournament can be found here: http://www.johnny101.com/post/2011/05/09/I-Placed-In-A-Tournament!!.aspx

My only goal when I decided to play was to not go 2-and-out, as I had been doing recently in a different weekly tournament. To be fair, this one is easier than the other one, but in a short race to 5 on a barbox, anything can happen. As such - I'm extremely happy with my performance overall and am going to take this experience and learn from it, use it for the next tournament.

It did make Mother's Day quite tough, but it was worth it, imo.

Congrats! I also played a tourney on Sun. but came in in the 5th out of 20. You did better.

i played in 2 tournaments this weekend. came in 4th in both and the same guy put me out in both.

Congrats. I took 4th in that tourney about a month ago. About 20 players. I would have played Saturday but a bet welching employee of the pool hall owes me a hundred from a month ago and won't pay me and worse dicks me around with bullshit texts telling me he's goin to. Let me know if you want to matchup some one-hole or ten ball. I'm better at barbox 8 ball. The guy Steven in the tourney works there also. He plays pretty good. He was my partner in a doubles tourney we won a month ago. James finished 3rd last month I believe.

Yeah, I'd like to shoot with ya sometime (both 10-ball and 1p - both games I don't get to play too often anymore but still love. well, the WPA rules 10-ball, "proper" 10-ball. not texas express 10-ball i mean), but I still don't get out to the rail that often - maybe once a week, at best. I've been going to Cue and Cushion lately, since I play in their weekly in-house league now.

And yeah - that Steve... I like playing with him, even if he does talk more than the average person. lol

If it's the employee I think it probably is, that's sad to hear. I'm not making excuses, but I do know that right before SportsCenter closed, he was having with living arrangements. He's always came through on whatever we bet, but then again, we play cheap, cuz I don't have a lot of funds to lose usually.

Yes it is Zach. If he at all remotely acted right and payed me something every week it would be one thing. It has been over a month and he has been gambling with other people I know and just not paying me. Plus sending me texts dicking me around.

I like C&C alot. I bought my table and several sticks there. I'll come up and play some cheap if you want let me know. I am not patronizing the rail right now so the closest 9 footers to me are in St. Chuck and Hillsboro.

Way to go, stl!
I should have known better than to enter one of those midnight pool tournaments. The last time I played in one it was so far past my bedtime I fell asleep during the semi-finals. Although I don't remember how the tournament turned out, I do remember waking up at Denny's with my face in an omelette. :)

Is he just better or do you think its mental?

yea hes better. he is a 7 and im a 5 in apa. i have beat him in league play once. these tournaments are a race to 2. friday nights tourn i won the lag, made the 8 on the break but scratched, that put me down 1 right away. 2nd game i only had 1 ball left when he sank the 8.

sat night when i faced him i had 2 balls left and 2 nd game 1 left. i played him close , just couldnt get on the 8 before he did.

Yeah, I didn't really properly "prepare" for the event. Honestly, I didn't think I'd make it that far. I knew that *IF* I went deep, it'd be a late night, but I really didn't expect my game to hold up. Although, there wasn't really a lot of good shooters and by all measures, I *should* have gotten to the final four, I just couldn't count on it. It's a short race, on a barbox afterall.

I should've taken a nap around 5pm to help prepare me for the long night, but I didn't - so by the time I had lost my 2nd match, I had been up for 20 hours.

I'll definitely play in another one, but I'll prepare better for it - and bring some high protein snacks along, which I had forgot at the house when I left.

Brendan - how are you closer to St. Charles/Hillsborough than C&C? I guess you're a bit west of the city? I (recently) typically go up to C&C on Wednesday nights for a couple of hours, between 7 and 10 or something like that. (btw, if you're facebook friends with them, you can see all of their specials in one of their photo albums - could save cash, though their prices are better by the hour than the Rail's).

That's really disappointing about Zach. He was doing something similar with me when he wanted to buy my jump cue, but never did - I figured it was because he became more of a one pocket player than 9-ball and didn't really need it. As much as he complains about other people doing that to him, I'm surprised he's pulling that crap.

Congrats Johnny! It sounds like the practice is paying off. I briefly contemplated going but the midnight start is just too late.

Have you been going over to Cahokia on Monday nights at all? I made it once and had a good time, but hope to be able to get over there more consistently now that the semester is winding down.

Thanks! I'm not sure if it's the practice or what, but whatever it is... something is working pretty good for me right now. :)

I haven't been to The Break in a little over a month. But I plan on going back this coming Monday, or perhaps the monday after? I was just about to shoot you an email actually to see if you'd like to head up to C&C sometime. I'll be there tonight if you'd like to sneak away from finals. :)

area

I live in West County/Ballwin/Manchester area. Teachers is about 25 minutes, the break is almost 30, Hillsboro is 40 min but good action out there. c&c is about 30-35. I'll come up and play there justlet me know. I am goin to hillsboro tonight prob. I used to go to the break on Monday nights but players are just too good for me to have a chance in 9 ball. I play 9 ball bad.

Yeah Zach shocked me too. He was supposed to pay me the next day on payday then the constant lies started every week.

Thanks for the invite. Last night was date night for the fiancee so that's a little tough to get out of  I'll probably be at The Break again 2 Mondays from now since everything will be finished up by then.

Congrats Johnny! It's definetely a stepping stone when you start placing in tournaments. It does change your mental attitude when you visualize placing high & you have no referrence in your memory, it makes your level of pressure that much more extreme as to where you have done so solidifies easier in your visalization to execute. Look at guys like SVB or Mika, once Shane won his first major tournament, he just went off & won all kinds of tourneys. Same with Mika, he wins the U.S. Open, then wins it again. They are solid players but the visualization to get to the finish line was more defined, like visualization when executing shots is critical. Keep competing & strengthen that mental game. You have it in you.
