My carbon fiber shaft lost a battle to a collet

I bought shaft collets from Atlas. My lathe is a drill and at the end a movable pillow bearing. I inserted the shaft in the collet, and then into the pillow bearing. Everything seemed ok tight, the screws were not tightened. And there was a mark all aroung the shaft at the end... What did I do wrong???

I'm not a cuemaker. CF is very susceptible to marking, scuffs and such when on a lathe. It probably won't effect playablility but it looks bad. I'd suggest either a plastic insert for your pillow bearing, leather, rubber, cork, or painters tape. Any kind of metal rubbing on it will make the shine look different. I'm eager to hear what actual cuemakers say with this.

You didn't use a proper lathe, that's the short answer, that's why I call those contraptions "shaft ruiners"
But if you want a better answer, we will need pictures.
