My experience with different chalk

Ok, so i am new, to new to tell how one chalk plays differently from another..but...here is what i have noticed. I have a Dark green cloth..so Master chalk is out, since they only make light green. Was using Silver Cup, tried National Tournament becasue i saw a report that ranked it higher. Again, i cant tell any difference playability wise, BUT..the National Tournament leaves a MUCH larger area of chalk dust when applying chalk then the Silver cup does. I am guessing that over time this is an issue. Anyone else have ideas/experince with this? TIA

No I have not tried it.

It worries me that the color difference will show up on the cloth to much..but i have no experience with it. Do you think i should try the masters, even though it is much lighter color then the cloth? TIA

Masters also makes chalk in Blue, which is what I would recommend.

I would stay away from Master's Green as it leaves chalk marks on the table. There was another thread on this a couple of month's ago.

In my opinion the Master green is junk. I bought a gross of it and am giving it away. The Masters blue is the best and doesn't seem to mark the green cloth to much.

There was a thread on this about 6 months ago. Most replys indicated that Masters was the best and blue was the only way to go.

National Tournament has got to be the dirtiest chalk out there. I still have a couple dozen pieces of the blue from a long time ago (black wrapper) and Ill tell ya, when you get done playing your hands are blue, your ferrule is blue, your table is blue...... it has a very strong dye and crumbles like talc. Im assuming the rest of the chalk they put out does the same thing. I will say master blue also. Its not that bad on a green cloth, and any dust you do get can be brushed/wiped off.

I've found that whenever you try and match the color of the chalk to the color of the cloth in an attempt to hide the appearance of the chalk on the cloth - it actually works out worse.

The exception is probably blue. There's a reason why it's the standard and most commonly used.

I can tell you from experience that green chalk on green simonis leaves nasty chalk marks everywhere. Blue is far less visible. Not only is it a color issue, but green chalk seems more "powdery" to me. The best I can explain it is that as you apply it, more comes off. It is dustier and more powdery. You have to stroke blue chalk on a few more times to get coverage (unless the cube is moist and thus muddy). With the green, it goes on thick and flakes off easy. I can wear out a cube of green chalk in 3 sessions. That's how bad it is. It is softer. Well, maybe not softer, but whatever it's made out of, it doesn't hold together as well.

Now, do I have some defective green chalk? I don't think so because this has been my experience anywhere I've used it.

Blue Master chalk is the best imo.

Is there any difference in the grit of different chalks. It seems to me that the blue chalk i have used is alot grainier than the green. The green seems to be finer and completely covers my tip, a lot of other chalks leave leather showing. May just be in my head.

I have Brunswick Centennial cloth, color Stone (like a khaki color). Should I use the Masters or Silver Cup tan or would another shade work better for me?

When i bought my table it came with a package of silver cup chalk and I used it for about 4-5 months. I ordered a new cue and decided to get some accessories for my table at the same time. I ordered a box of masters and I have to say, in my opinion, the masters chalk is much much better than the silver cup. I find it stays on the tip much much better.

As for colors, I have a burgundy felt at the moment and use the burgundy colored chalk and it's working fine for me. The silver cup seemed to be lighter and would streak where the masters doesn't seem to do that.

Once i recover this I plan to get Simonis green but for now until it wears out, it'll do.

Try some masters, I doubt you'll regret it.

I also heard some good things about balabushka chalk but I myself have never seen it.

I personally use Masters Tan, it is a bit softer than the blue but I feel the coverage is more through. Yes it does leave alot of dust but it alway's cleans up easily, none of the rooms I play in have asked me not to use it. My table at home has Beige Simonis and it's definately not a problem here. I find that this color also keeps your shaft a more natural color longer than others.

I don't use enough chalk to make a mark on the cloth except on my break. Is that a sign I am not using enough? Blue masters is what I will more than likely use for the rest of my life. Silver cup is rubbish.

Silver cup

I have dark green tournament 860 simmonis cloth, and I use silver cup light green. My wife has silver cup dark green. The only one that marks up the table is the dark green. The light green you can't even see anywhere on the table.

Simonis Tour Blue & Master Blue Chalk

Anyone have this combination? Any markings made by this chalk on this table. Right now, I am using Billiard's and Barstool's brand of chalk that matches the Tour Blue Cloth (the chalk is decent)

Anyone ever use Balabushka Chalk

Talk about a messy Chalk, think it has some Silacone in it, and it stuck to everything...
