My first Gold Crown refurbish

I have a 8' Brunswick home table that I bought 6 years ago and I have been thinking about upgrading to a 9' table for a year or so. I struggled with buying a new or close to new table vs an older table and refurbing it. Thanks to this forum, I decided to buy an older table. After months of looking, I found one just outside of Memphis. It is a CGI in pretty bad shape and needs a lot of work. I paid $1,300 for it and brought it home April 18, 2026.

I was surprised at how easy it came apart. It took two of us about 1.5 hours to take it apart and load it into by truck. It had a busted counter but he swapped it for a good one. Almost every screw was loose including pocket castings, so that made it easier to disassemble. Key features:
Cast metal logo
Cast metal adjustable legs
Cast metal pockets
Counters
Drop pockets
Rail clips for trim/skirt connection
1in Slate/Brunstone?
Rectangle nut-plate to secure rail to slate.

In good condition as well
I'd be replacing the timber within the staple area on the rails as they are now Swiss cheese
I believe it's a GC2 due to the timber stain legs and skirts.

Thanks. I thought the same thing too...until I started sanding and found blue paint on the rails and white on the legs!
 
I couldn't find anything in my shop to get the finish off of the wood except for 60grit sandpaper! I didn't want to attempt working in the small spaces of the ball box so I took it completely apart. I was glad to find out the it was only held together with nails...no glue.

Thanks...I have been inspired in part by yours! By the way, I noticed that you refurbished yours white... My wife said that although it looks great, she doesn't think it would match the vision for our room. I am thinking about semi-gloss black wood with matte black rails and nickel plated castings (or silver paint for the feet).
 
Mine is blue and white. All GCI’s had a white base.

I got you confused with another thread, but I remember yours...I read through all 23 pages of your thread...thanks for linking it here though, I will be referring back to it.

I noticed as i got closer to the ends of the rails, the staples didn't hold very well at all
 
When I started sanding the long pieces around the skirt, the wood was so hard and the grind marks so deep, there was no way that I was going to sand it with a palm sander, so I decided to run them through my planer...I just screwed some 2x2's to the back and made light passes until I cleaned them up. Then I used the palm sander to clean up the rest and soften the edges. There were some chatter marks from the planer but it didn't take long to sand those out.

What was the guy thinking who performed this "spectacular" work???? There are so many runs in the black it looks like he painted by submerging the wood in paint. And if that is in fact paint why did he think he needed to sand the old paint off when all he needed to do was lightly sand it? There are some people out there who just shouldnt touch anything.

I agree...He didn't even take the skirts off to paint them...it is all over the trim pieces.

I am planning on Emerald Urethane Semi-Gloss Black on all wood pieces. I am using an HVLP sprayer. Here is the first coat on foot skirt:
