My Jimmy Lee Custom being built and in progress...

Ok just wanted to do a run down of the cue that Jimmy Lee is building for me ... First I did a run down of cue makers that I wanted to use and had alot of intrest in. I did'nt want to wait a year or two and did't really want to tye up thousands in one cue and I would rather split those thousands up and have several nice cues. Not to mention several of the top cue makers don't do customs that a customer designs you get what they make for you. I came up with a final four Jimmy Lee , Doug Patrick , Joe Baker and Jeff Eason ... I also have Brent Hartman making a J/B cue for me ... This is the Jimmy Lee custom he is building for me he keeps me updated all the time so this should be easy for me to do ....

First thing I did was shoot Jimmy a pm telling him I was very interested in him building me a cue . Late that night he replied saying he would love too. Jimmy works all day and works on cues at night so most of his replies come at night. He told me to call him and I did we talked for a couple hours about pool , some cue makers he knows never nothing bad always positive , about our family's and he had me rolling on the ground about a prospective customer who thought he was Chinese because of his name Jimmy Lee ala Bruce Lee ... We talked about the cue I wanted and did a build sheet on it for him for future refrence ... We discussed price which is very reasonable with Jimmy, A time frame for completion of the cue etc ...etc ... Jimmy is very easy to talk to and has some of the best customer service I have seen him and Jeff Eason are awesome in that respect.

The Cue in my mind is going to be a looker it is designed by me and Jimmy has given me some good ideas along the way. The most important one so far is I was going to go with Birdseye in the forearm and Jimmy sent me some pics of other woods to use in them one was quilted maple which I opted to change the birdseye to quilted maple ...

The Cue itself will have a Gaboon ebony butt sleeve with Gaboon ebony points going up into a quilted maple forearm. With 4 veneers, White against the ebony ... Then Turqious , Blue then Black ... It will have ring work at points A,B,C,D, and E ... It will have cross like inlays (Ivorine) with dots surrounding them in the butt sleeve and points ... A black embossed leather lizzard wrap ...Ivorine Butt cap.... It will have two shafts built to the specs I requested 13 mm and 12.50 mm with matching ring work of course. The cue will wiegh 19.5 oz's I think the cue will look awesome and I am really looking forward to it ... Below are some pics of the birdseye Jimmy sent me ...We later decided on Quilted Maple ....

Design ...

I think the hardest part of the process so far has been getting the inlays down and ring work .. This is difficult to do over the phone or via pm / email it took several calls and pm's to get something we were both happy with ... Again all I can say is Jimmy has been awesome to work with he is quickly becoming my favortie cue maker. He sends pics asks quesitons before he does anything and works very closley with you on your cue. He is open to change as long as change is feasable and he has not already done whatever it is you may want to change. A very opened minded and customer oriented cue builder. Hey he even called me to see what size T-Shirt I wear he is going to send me one with my cue ..Awesome perk ...lol...

Ok back to the design on the butt sleeve and points ... After several pm's me sending Jimmy pics of cues with pics in themof inlays I was trying to show him what I wanted and Jimmy sending pics back we finally came up with something that we both liked. Here is a pic of the cross like symbol that will be in the butt sleeve and points ....

Once that was done we had to decide on what kind of dot pattern we were going to use Jimmy sent me more drawings with sets of dots on them ... Here is the pic of the final one I chose the set of dots we are using is Set 2....

Inlays

As always Jimmy's customer service with me has been outstanding ... The next thing he was to contact me about was when he started putting in the points and veneers... I was kind of nervious about this as I did not know how well I chose ... I wanted white up against the gaboon ebony to highlight it even more and hope it will also highlight the inlays in the cue. Jimmy had a heck of a time finding a good white veneer but then Jimmy bends over backwards to please his customers. He had talked about a white Ivory substitute he may use for the white inlays. He seemed kind of frustrated because he could not find a good white material to use as a veneer in the points at least not one that satisfied him or was something he wanted in one of his cues. Then he emailed and said good news I found a good white veneer ... :) ... I was concerned about putting two blueish veneers together in the turqious and the blue then I wanted the fourth veneer (Outside) to be black to tie the veneers back into the Gaboon Ebony .... Here is a pic I saw yesterday of my points and veneers in the quilted maple and how my cue is coming along...

The picture has me excited ... Jimmy Lee told me he is now building cues full time ... He plans to start doing shows I hope he lets me know if there is one close to the Georgia area I would really like to meet this guy he has been just awesome to deal with. The cue still has a long way to go and I'm already leaning towards having him do another for me ... It is hard to beat someone that treats you as well as Jimmy does.

I will update this thread when the cue progresses further much like Powerlineman80 is doing ... I hope to use this thread all the way through the process including the final review... Than you for looking any opinions are welcome ....

In fact he told me he is now building cues full time and as always his customers come first that is how he built his business and he will not forget that... I am very happy with every spect of this venture so far ... Jimmy Lee has been awesome .... He is working with me to give me a cue the exact same way I want it to look ...

I like to play with designs. I have a couple cues in the works like you but I'm afraid of putting them up on the net as somebody might like it and copy it. You never know.

that looks very nice...

John PT ...

I like your take on the design ... I'm not to worried about someone copying the design of the cue I have given Jimmy ... In fact I would probably take it as a compliment ... Thanks for your input ...

Hello Brent ...

Yes that looks like the sketch of the J/B we discussed you building for me and I sent you the deposit on it ... How are you doing ? I'm looking forward to that cue as I have heard you do some excellent work ...

Brent just went to my gmail and pulled up the emails where we discussed the Cue ... Here is the pic you sent me and we agreed on ...

Have you been able to start on the cue yet ? Do you think the birdseye maple will hold up in a jump break I keep hearing about the birdseye break in birdseye cues ... Now that Jimmy has turned me onto the quilted maple I'm pretty high on it ... If you have not started the cue yet I would probably prefer quilted instead of the birdseye ... But I will be happy and content with which ever one you use as we have discussed this previously and agreed upon birdseye to start with ... Feel free to pm me , email me or call me when ever you desire or have a question...

Thanks...

Very nice design.....:)

I think you will be real disapointed if you use quilted as a break cue.. It just does'nt hit hard enough..

Thanks ...

Thanks Joe ...

Yes Brent and I talked about that and we decided to stick with the Birdseye ... I'm gonna stick with quilted Maple in my playing cue Jimmy is building for me though .... That is some pretty wood ...

Thanks for your advise and I'm still loving your cue ....

Update ....

Jimmy sent me a update on my cue last night ... He is very excited to be building cues full time now... He told me that each one he builds is beautiful and like a part of his family he hates to let them go ... I PM'ed him earlier this week to ask him to stain the forearm(Quilted Maple ) in a honey colored stain hoping to bring out the wood work more ... His reply was yes it would being out the grain in the wood and he would be happy to stain it he has gallons of the stuff laying around his shop and the cue will be magnified 10 times once the finish coat is applied... Great guy work with ....

He had finished turning the forearm and had the points in and this week is working on the ring work and putting the handle on.... He said the cue is pretty and coming along very nice.... Here are some pics ....

Update ....

Well Jimmy Lee sent me pictures of the ring work before he glues the handle on for my apporval... He has just about hit the ring work I wanted on the head ... I'm very happy with the way the cue is coming along and even happier with the way Jimmy keeps me updated .. He is very nice to work with and really makes you feel like your a part of the process... The cue is coming along nicely .... it will get a leather wrap and inlay work that I requested ...The cue continues to look better and better every time I see it ... I hope this trend continues ... And with Jimmy I am sure it will....
