My Lasik Experience: A buyer's guide!

I had my lasik surgery done in 2006 at LasikMD here in Edmonton for $1800 total. My eyes were -4.25/-4.00 with some astigmatisms and within 8 hours of the surgery I was crystal clear. 24 hours later I was tested at 20/20 in both eyes and within a week it improved to 20/15 on both sides. My last eye exam was about a year ago and it hasn't changed at all.

I did notice an extreme light sensitivity and dry eyes with the feeling of sand in them immediately after the surgery but took my eye drops and went to sleep. 4 hours later I woke up long enough to put more drops in and went back to sleep. I woke up later that evening and sat in my living room watching playoff hockey crystal clear on tv without any problems.

I really never had issues with halos or starbursts after the first couple of days but streetlights had a small fog around them and really bright oncoming headlights were hard to take for about a week. Playing pool, however, was a huge adjustment. I had built so many preshot routines being accustomed to wearing glasses that it took me a long time to change them. My game has improved a great deal since the surgery though, if only I had the desire to play as much.....

So I went for my 1-week post operative visit today, along with the halos and corneal hazing that I've been struggling with. Everything still looks like a flashback sequence or sentimental moment on Lifetime television....

However there has been some big advances already: my left eye has tested stable at the low end of the 20/20 spectrum, whereas my right (dominant) eye is at the high end, a solid 20/15 with mild correction. My optometrist is very confident that my vision is still improving, as the edema (swelling) and haziness are still around, thus lowering my visual acuity. I remain hopelessly optimistic.

This confidence was enough for me to attempt to play pool again tonight. Mind you, I haven't touched a cueball in THREE months, as I was unable to play without contact lenses--you can't wear lenses for weeks prior to the initial Lasik screening. In between multiple clinics, I had doubled up on my nightly ritual of watching Accu-stats and the Earl/Efren 'Color Of Money' match, like a prayer before bed.

Without expectations, trying to stay as calm as possible, and just being an empty vessel, I was noticing things about the action of the balls that I had never seen before. It allowed me to loosen up and really juice up the cueball, or slow roll the long-in straights. Something has happened to me in this time off. And I don't know how to put my finger on it, how to summarize or explain it, but I am ready for more!!

Anyway, just a personal update from me. I hope the aforementioned advice has helped any of you. For myself, this is just the first step to the next level. I can feel it coming.

For me this has been a timely thread as I have my appointment to verify that I am a candidate Oct 14. I'm a tad disappointed that all the price quotes I've gotten have been higher than what people were paying years ago but oh well, I know I will be happy. My dad did it and loves it.

I'm excited for you! Congratulations and good luck--with all the information that's out on the internet, there shouldn't be too many surprises.

What kind of vision correction are you having? Lasik/Intralase, Lasek, PRK?
