My Minnesota Pool Boot Camp Report

I had the opportunity to do the Boot Camp in mid-November. It was a great experience and I think it was well worth it. I waited a bit to post a review because I wanted to see how it would change my game after a little bit of time to work on the things we covered and do some of the drills Demetrius recommended for me. I noticed some changes and improvements right away, but still wanted a bit more time. I also think it will be interesting to see where I am in a year if I keep doing the things he suggests.

There is a good nonstop flight to MSP from where I am. The only downside is getting to the airport about 4:00 a.m. But that actually puts us at a good time to start the first day. We had a chance to discuss things in the car on the way to Demi’s house which has a 9’ Diamond to work on things. He watched me hit some balls and then some stop shots. He could tell a ton about my issues from this and we began working. As you may have seen or read, his approach isn’t just teaching a set stroke or certain fundamentals. That said, my stroke is now better and I think improving and he noticed something about my bridge that other instructors missed.

The main thing is work on controlling the cueball and how to approach the game and patterns. Things I need a lot of work on. The three day session is really good and I see why he says it is necessary. You have a chance to work on things while he is coaching you, which I found very valuable. Especially when a particular thing isn’t coming easy. And I know I was challenged on some things that didn’t come easy at all. Seeing how he approaches the game is also extremely valuable. One of the things we did was work through racks in scotch doubles. Talking through the rack then trying to execute is a great experience.

I can’t really give a minute by minute review and wouldn’t want to. The 3 days taught me a ton and gave me a path to improve. After getting home I got a review e mail and suggested drills. A couple drills were specifically recommended to work on things I most need and why. The why is significant to me. I am finding that one of the drills can be particularly frustrating. That tells me it is really needed. I have seen improvement so far, and know that if I stick with it I will see more improvement. My results in tournaments and league seem a little better. A couple games at the last league match showed me that, a good out and a blown break and run missing the 8ball. Didn’t get good enough on the 8,and while I know it is not good to get almost out, the run to get to the 8was probably one I couldn’t have done a month before. Aside from results, my approach is different and what I see other players do is different.

There’s that saying about poker, if you sit at a table and after a while don’t identify the weakest player.....Or said differently, you need to identify mistakes specifically. I find myself doing that better in pool now. Seeing mistakes by players above me and taking some games off them, that kind of thing. But need more time for more results as mentioned above. Also yesterday after I was done playing I was watching a good player practice and he was hitting them well. I noticed something he does well that I wouldn’t have noticed before probably. Reinforced what Demi was saying.

Anyway, if you have a chance to do the boot camp and don’t, you are missing out IMO.

Im glad to hear the TinMan is still doing his boot camp. I was thinking about going back when I played daily. I’ve never had any lessons and rarely had the chance to play against or watch real good players up close. I think I will give this a shot once Im back into the game a bit.

I’ve got to go back to the pathfinder school this year, best done during cold weather. I think Minnesota will be better to visit in the summer, might be a break from brutal MD humidity

I wouldn’t worry too much about timing or weather. I get wanting to go when you will be playing more. The timing worked well for me because I have more time to play now and I worked it into visiting my son. But go when you can IMO.

Lol the humidity in MN is the same as Florida 😂

Damnit! lol I guess I just can’t win. Unless I can afford property in the northern and southern hemispheres and live in perpetual fall/winter.

I think of those northern states as possible havens in the summer but I’ve never been
It's beautiful but can be quite humid and full of mosquitos.
Honestly if you're coming to play and do Demi's camp, I would come in the winter. More players at the tournaments and all the construction guys are laid off and hitting balls. Pool is an inside sport after all 😂

the northern drier states have low humidity in summer and lots of sunshine. best summer weather.
but few pool rooms.

Well that’s that then. I’m in a forever war with the mosquitoes. The place I live used to be called “the grey swamp” before it was built on. Mosquito territory. Sometimes i spend 10 minutes on the porch killing all the mosquitoes buzzing around me before I can open the door.

I started tracking with tick marks in my railing last year. Partway through. I took out 200+ that summer. This past summer I got 287 - just doing my part to make this a better world. My neighbors probably think I’m crazed…erroneously of course.

At my cabin we have these things. A couple weeks in and there is a mountain of bodies under it. The sound is so satisfying.

problem they found years back with the bug zappers is they attract the mosquitos from farther away that might not come towards you. and that thing doesnt get but a small fraction of them. so you end up with more of them near you with it.
they also kill alot of good things like moths.

they work well inside your place for what has come in.

ive put lots and lots of swallow houses around my places and swallows can eat their own weight in bugs each day. the birds keep mine down to very little.

Thank you for the positive feedback!

2025 is about to kick off. I'm hungry to make it my best pool year. I look forward to playing the Derby in a few weeks and am adding other good events to my calendar.

I'm not for most people. Most people never got the pool bug. Of the few that did, many got to a level years ago where they felt like they were pretty good, progress got difficult, they felt like they knew how to play but just couldn't execute what they knew, and then they quit improving. They blame lack of time to work on their fundamentals or a lack of talent. Then they come to AZB to talk about pool or coach new league players on their Wednesday night team so they feel like they can do something with their knowledge since they can't actually run out. So yeah, if that's you then I'm not a good fit.

For the minority of the minority, the few players who have the bug, and aren't ready to discard their dreams of playing a fine game of pool, then let's go. Message me and let's get something going so 2025 can be your best year too. The answer isn't that you know everything about pool but just don't have the time to put it together. The answer is that there are missing links in your chain and if we identify them and strengthen them you will see your performance reach new levels.

As for talk of bugs or snow or humidity, I have great news. I have one of those indoor pool tables so you don't have to worry about it. It's always 70 degrees and fluorescent in my pool room.

Take care and have a great New Year!

Build some bat houses too so you have the second shift working for you! I don't know if I like watching the birds or the bats more, both more entertaining than a zapper will ever be.
