My Poly Black GC aint so Poly anymore

I scored a pretty sweet deal on a GC III a couple years back. A big part of the great deal was the tops of the rails are pretty scratched up, and not much to look at. I bought the table hoping at some point I could have the rails re-finished and replace the chrome hardware and have a 'newish' table.

Treating this similar to a car finish, I was hoping to simply scuff up the current finish, and then apply a polyuerthane to the surface. I have tried a couple of things - both wipe on and spray on poly from the mega-home-mart. The spray on was pretty good, but the wipe on didn't work so well, due to the curved profile of the tops of the rail. Either way, I am not getting the deep, glossy finish I was hoping for from either.

Anyone have any better ideas? Looking for something I can do myself.

Thanks!

Automotive Clearcoat

Two part or three part automotive epoxy clear coat. If you have a friend who has or works at an auto body shop, see what they would charge to shoot the rails for you. They are set up to do a professional job and when they are painting cars they often have enough left over to do small jobs at the same time. You will probably have to prep them (light sanding and cleaning) and do the final wet sanding and buffing yourself when they're done spraying... which is no big deal, just a little elbow grease.
