1st Catalog Palmer Model 8 Black and Silver.

There were slim pickings when it came to Palmers at SBE. Joe Van had his selection of very nice Palmers, which looked even better in person and there was one other dealer with two examples.

Joe Van once again proved he is a gentleman by directing me to John Vero, another fellow AZer who had this cue for sale.

This is now my third Model 8 but John had it priced right, plus both shafts are original to the cue, and the sweet-spot for me is the personalized foil. Another plus is that one shaft has a new layered tip.

The cue has bumps and bruises as well as an aftermarket Scotch-Tape fix to the wrap.

It clearly could use a refinish and rewrap, so I will probably send it off to be beautified. However, I really like the patina on this cue. I played with it last night and true to form, it's just like the Palmers I know and love. So I have some reluctance to making her glow. But regardless, I like a project and the "before and afters".

That's as rough as two nights in jail.

What does that mean?

It means that, that cue is or was a great player in its day.

Man if that old cue (and several of mine) could talk.

The cue obviously saw alot of use, but interestingly, other than the wrap now coming loose in one area is solid and tight (And definitely original) and the entire butt is clean and without any damage.

I am really torn whether or not to leave it as-is.

Imagine if they relic-ed cues like they do to guitars, this would be all the rage.

I don't understand. I know nothing about guitars. What is relic-ed?

I did buy my wife a Martin accusustic guitar about 15-20 years ago for Christmas one year....it has only been out of the case twice. It was pretty expensive when I bought it. Once the instructor told her she would have to cut her nails to play guitar, that was the last time it was out of the case.

A relic finish on a guitar is one that is aged with chips, dents, scrapes, possibly cigarette burns, etc. Buyers pay big money for it today. It's all the rage.

Go figure.

Very nice cue Jay, I really like the 2-tone wrap. It's hard to tell from the pictures but the wrap appears to be Cortland, not Dacron. The butt of the cue is original and is polished and does not have a finish over it. If I did anything I would refinish the front od the cue, have the wrap cleaned and secured (if it is Cortland), clean the shafts slightly not to loose all the patina. Some of the guys out there would refinish the butt of the cue which will eventually delaminate from the plastic. JMO.

I am really considering leaving the cue as-is. It's not going to play any differently refinished and I like the idea of a cue I don't have to worry about. I am warming-up to the "character" of the cue.

The wrap is definitely Dacron. I removed the tape and it is somewhat stable but... I tried cleaning the wrap without any success. I suppose I could use a stronger cleaner but then I might have a clean wrap on a cue that does warrant it.

I'm leaning toward waiting on doing anything with this one.

Actually the black is starting to unravel, so my thought is to rewrap only the black and do nothing else.

While you're on the subject, I have a 1970 Martin D-18 that is relic-ed. Plays great and looks pretty damn good, but you can tell that the original owner played this guitar as it was meant to be. It has the real rosewood fretboard, all original(except strings), and about 75-80% condition.

My question, approximently what is this guitar valued at? Any answer(s) would be appreciated.

Now that I know you play guitar I may have to squeeze a few lessons into our next deal.. lol

I actually do not mind helping people obtain cues, whether I am in on it or not. The reason, is simple, to many times dealers isolate their clients and try to milk them for every nickel. If guys like me, expect the hobby to grow, you need to let your customers experience other deals, and dealers. In my case, they have always purchased from me again, many times. I cannot tell you the number of collectors that have stopped collecting because of some dealer attitudes.
