My thoughts(ramblings) on keeping Pool alive N well...

I missed the Open this year :( It was the first time in alot of years that I didn't go. The upside is that I followed it all and then some, online. I also checked the schedule for some local, upcoming tourneys and got some info on Jack Colavita's 14.1 thing @ Comet Billiards next weekend.

It's kind of a no-brainer to us, but the best shot Pool has to grow is over the Internet. The Internet can get the word out, reach more people and keep everybody up to date on what's the latest poop in Pool. You sure as hell won't find it on ESPN  MAybe, one day, Pool will get back to being a "mainstream" thing, kinda like how Golf or even Bowling is today. Maybe, one day, Poolplayers can actually make a living in Pool. Maybe, one day, Pool will have realtime TV coverage. Maybe, one day, I'll wake up looking like Jude Law

Eric >one of those scenarios might happen

You have got to have ...

A vision or plan for billiards overhaul. Everyone tries to
start a little piece, and when you have a jillion pieces,
only then do they give thought to the overall. Well, I
am a Sr. Systems Engineer or Analyst by profession, and
I am here to tell you that 'go to programming' is a
nightmare, and that's what we have in Pool today in the U.S.
The steps for having a good structure for Billiards is not
that hard to define, take some work putting the
infrastructure in place, have to promote the sport,
decide challenges and rewards at various levels of the
sport, and have a governing body for the sport, especially
at the professional level. One that would not have blinders on.

Let tournament promoters promote tours and tournaments, you
need qualified people above them to do strategic planning
for the sport as a whole, and that have the power to make
all the different people out there conform to standards that
are set up.

We have had too many governing bodies for the sport. What we need is a set of rules to run the governing body. The internet is a great place for this discussion. Why don't we have it? Why don't we all propose these rules and list these ideas on a thread in some logical manner.

If you build it, they will come...

If one entity pays better than all others by a large margin.
And it gives all other entities a piece of the pie to come into the fold.
Dissension kept to a minimum because for once you can make a living playing pool.
If it rolls out the venues on a set schedule like Nascar with the sponsors to boot.

Too big of a dream?

I agree.....partially...

The problem is there is not enough depth and money in the game right now...

Usually the best run group will survive and become the dominant group and governing body...(IE: Football- AFL / NFL - Basketball ABA / NBA etc. etc.)

The problem with pool is the people that start these new tours or orginazations have to deal with the "you can't play in their tour or you can't play in ours" sillyness.......

The population of "GOOD" pool players is split and thus neither group grows or even survives because they are all too greedy and want "hand".....

RULE 1-2 of the governing body of pool should be.... "A professional should be able to play in any professional event he/she wants to without penalty or persecution from any tour or organizaion"

I say RULE 1-2 because RULE 1-1 should be...A professional player should coduct themselves in a professional manner and do everything in their power to promote the game...els be barred from tournament play"

Jeez, how can I say I think that this (and posts like it) is pure horseshit without being rude?
You may adjust the rules and throw money at tournaments 'till OJ confesses, and the game as it's known now won't have changed.
The reason pool doesn't fly in the mainstream, as I see it, is that people don't much like to watch it on TV. Period. This has been proved ad infinitum by ESPN, despite their best efforts. So I think you have it backwards. If televised pool ever becomes hot, then all your issues will take care of themselves, and pro players will be rolling in dough - but not before - and this will remain no matter what you or anyone else has planned for the salvation of the sport.
Having said all that: I don't give a crap if pool ever gets off the ground. It doesn't need repairing. It's just small.
