My upcoming match with Johnny Archer

Cough up the dough and play Johnny...in fact do it a couple of times or more. Johnny is a heck of a nice guy and a great player you can only gain from the experience. Just do it!

Oh, I will play, I just had to confirm that my initial reaction and expectations of the match were a bit off-base...

Now, I will go participate with a better mindset.

Look at it this way - If all you want to do is watch Mr. Archer play his best Pro game up close just go watch him play in a Pro tournament, buy some Accustats videos etc. (I'd recommend some of his old mid-90's matches when he was playing loose and fluid myself.)

If you go in to play him with anything less than winning in mind you will let yourself down and you will know it.

Pool, more so than almost any other sport, is based around personal achievement. The way I look at it is your opponent is never at the table with you, you play alone, you win alone and you lose alone. It could be anyone in that chair and it should make no difference once you get an open chance at a rack.

I guess to split the difference if you really want to see him shoot "against you" you could play a lot of safeties. I have no idea how he'd react to you trying to 3-foul him out in a little pro-am challenge, that might be fun to see.

Harold Acosta, the President of the Billiard Federation of Puerto Rico, has sent out a form for signing up to play both Johnny Archer and John Schmidt down here in PR. The cost is $30 per match per player.

PM me your e-mail address if you need an entry form.

If you need any other help with travel to the island, let me know.

Regards,
John
