I traveled into a local bar lastnight . True I was looking for a game.Nothing gigantic something even about my speed .Fair but not great speed. Something that I could battle for hours and come close to even.So I sit at the bar nursing my beer and waiting for a bigmouth.
About 20 min later I hear that bigmouth!I hear him very well . So slowly over the next hour I coherx my way over to the other side of the bar where the table they are on is .I am sure I have mark here. The guy makes balls but no position play at all.He keeps asking to increase the bets against the local drunks.
So I am sitting there with my back to him as he pounds through the balls. The place is pretty busy and its elbow room now at the bar.A buddy of mine pushes his way beside me at the bar and orders a couple shots includeing 1 for yours truly. After a battle of " no" I have to take the shot.He looks at me and says you know who that is on the table there? I says no who? He says thats the Baltimore kid.
I spin around on my barseat because I know the guy that was just shooting was NOT the kid! I asked him who told you this? He said well everyone in the place is saying it is.It was not the kid.I knew the kid.So I walked over to the guy feeling my booze well now and said so your the Baltimore Kid hugh?He said yepper thats me but I need to keep it on the low down.
This guy was about 25 years old 15 to 20 years too young .I know the kid could not have stayed so young looking. The kid made more money by looseing then winning he was a true hustler so I looked under his chin for a big scar. The first tell!
You see years back he was supposed to dump bad to very big named shooter and the shooter got mouthy to him.So he ran out on the shooter in a major way.I think he closed 3 sets of straight pool race to 100 and the big named guy got up maybe 5 times to see the worst safty imaginable.Impossible shots.
The kid could look at any clump of balls and pick one out and make it so the safes left by the bigname guy were of no signifigance. The kids backers were of the "Italian type" and that night while leaving the establishment the kids backer rammed him down into the concrete and busted his chin really bad.I Saw it!There is still probibly a blood stain on the ground there still.
He was supposed to loose bad and he shut that guy down . I remember the kid had stiches horrible under the chin. This guy here had not a scratch and I know that had to leave a bad scar!Unless he got major plastic sugery this was not the kid!!!!
Then I remeber the cue the Kid used.It had a "w" on the top between the points.almost like this -W- .I remember because when I asked him what that meant he said it was for "winners" because it was a winners cue.I dont know who the maker was but I know there was a "W" on the top of the cue between the points and it was a very rare cue.
I saw the kid buy another cue that had a "W" on it a few years later also from a player who also did not know what it was.I asked a local pool hall owner(Tipper for those who remember Baltimore Billiards) who made the "W" cue and he said they are made for winners and laughed at me.The Baltimore Kid Prided on this "W" cue and I looked at this guys cue and there was no "W" on it at all . This was definatly NOT the Baltimore Kid.
This is the second time in about 10 years I have seen a FAKE Baltimore Kid .I have also seen FAKE Breadmans-3 Fingers-Cigar Toms and Siegals(local great players) except Mike took it to the limit.I hate it.These guys have earned the names they have.Heck I think all are supposed to be dead but Mike Siegal and Cigar Tom.I was told 3 fingers and the Kid were suppose to play dead and moved and stayed off the tables as they made so much cash hustleing that certain people would want them dead. Then they both misteriously up and died or something wierd.
How many players have any of you met that said they were a top name locally or pro and were just a wannabe ? By the way the fake Baltimore kid with no scar and no "W" cue was asked to leave by the owner of the bar!In a
very convinceing manner.I am sure the real Kid is somewhere in heaven playing straightpool by himself on a barbox.I think all the fakes should be taken outside and get a true attitude adjustment.

Just found out

I just found out that the W cue is made by Robert Weir.If anyone has one of these cues for sale please let me know and if anyone knows the correct value of one please tell me and the history of who Robert Weir was.

Thanks alot that was nice

Tricky topic. This can come in two forms:

1) somebody claiming to be somebody they are not
2) somebody using the same nickname as somebody famous

Clearly, number one here is unacceptable.

For number two, its' a little less clear. If a great pool player emerges in the Baltimore area, is there really anything wrong with him calling himself "The Baltimore Kid?" Probably not, nicknames are not copyrighted.

For me personally, I'm still getting over the fact that George Steinbrenner came along and had the temerity to call himself "The Boss" when everyone knew that Bruce Springsteen already had that name locked up. Boy, the nerve of some people!

LMAO! I know Little John didn't get his name from ripping off the rap star, but when some one says Little John, you have to ask...the Eastside Boyz?? :p

I guess I'm too old. When I think of Little John I also think of Robin Hood.

Once upon a time.............

About million years ago when I was 19 or so, a fellow comes up to the St. Louis major poolroom and asked the houseman if there is anyone who shoots "Big-Time pool" for money.
HE CLAIMED TO BE "FAST EDDIE FELSON".
Now this was about 2 years after the Hustler came out but everyone that could play knew that Fast Eddie Felson was strictly fiction OR Ronnie Allen.
Still, No one wanted to play this goof because they either thought he might be a cop or some nutcase that might pull out a gun a shoot somebody.
Now would I be telling this story - if - I wasn't the one to get up and play him?
This guy couldn't run a rack with 10 innings, but he was playing me for $10 a game. That was pretty good action back then.
The best part is - Why did he keep playing me after he had lost over 25 games and KNEW he couldn't win ???
Because everytime I missed and it was his shot, I said
"IT'S YOUR SHOT FAST EDDIE"!
I said it just like Gleason said it to Newman and - I think I could see this nut getting aroused everytime I said it.

Ahh, Those Were The Days, My Friends.

OHB, you're an aboslute crackup. For me, I'm sad to say that I'm not able to make these kinds of games............since I'm allergic to fish.

This is hardly a unique nickname. Half the young poolplayers start out with some kinda 'Kid' nickname. Ive known of at least 3 Billy the Kids in the last 15 years and a whole lot of 'the Kids' and several Fast Eddies as well.

If he claimed to be The Black Widow" then i could see you being upset. There is another one of those on the 'Eating Contest' circuit though.

I've been kicking myself all day thinking the same thing. I should have played him first.Everyone who I talked to said that was the ultimate sucker.I was just upset about it.I will remember this next time.

Agreed the KID is a common name.Just in this instance in our area the Baltimore Kid was a true master and an exceptional hustler.I would have placed him against any top pro of our time.No offense to you pros at all
inplied. He had the gift. This guy had nothing to prove to anyone and you could tell. From the guys I talked to today there is tell of 350 to 400 ball runs.Yes after someone is gone stories get streched a little bit but I would say if he decided he wanted to run 350 to 400 balls the guy would have done it.If not hew would have practiced till he did.He may have really done it. Nowone will ever know. Thanks for your reply and correct I guess I will hear the KID as more years go by and by.He definatly was refering to whom I am talking about though.I should have taken his last cent though the other post is correct I should have.

If you are talking about "Three fingered Ronnie" from ocean city. He is alive and well although he did 5 years. He has been out for about two years now.

What I don't understand is why anyone would want to do this. If I'm matching up, and someone claims to be a well known strong player, I'm just going to have to get more weight because of his reputation. If he's a banger pretending to be great, it's going to cost him in the long run. The ones I worry about are the ones who claim to be nobody!

Walter Tevis said that the characters were fictional, however, he did a lot of research along the way and one of the men that he talked to prior to writing The Hustler was Eddie Parker, who also used to go by the name "Fast Eddie"
and "Fast Eddie Felsen" as an alias when he was on the road, amongst other aliases. He spelled Felsen with an "E" and Tevis changed Felson to be spelled with an "O". There were other parts of "The Hustler" that were almost identical to what Eddie Parker told him, but Tevis changed those slightly too.
Such as when he went to Louisville (I think) to play the wealthy businessman and they ended up playing billiards instead of pool. The $$ amount was changed.

Also, Eddie Felson (movie) had both of his thumbs broken after a hustle. Eddie Parker just had one forefinger broken by a bunch that were pissed after he hustled him.
