It is best to buy a good grade of HSS with cobolt ,5-10% ASSAB 17 is a very good grade for tools and is also quite close to .250 inch stock. M42 also works OK but I have had better tool life with the assab 17 over generic m42 grades hss.

There should be lots (and I mean LOTS) of places quite local to you that sell tool bits. You might spend more on shipping for 5 of these $2 items ! Spend some time to find the local suppliers and then you'll have a source for many items that you could need.
