Need a Schon Model #

A friend of mine asked me to help identify a Schon he picked up. I've been searching but have not found it in any of the current Schon catalogs.

There are a couple of finish dings on the butt. One shaft is warped but the other is in great shape.

Any help with identification and an approximate value would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest e-mailing Evan Clarke at Schon cues. You'll probably hear back in a day or two.

He is extremely good at identifying his cues. It's a pretty basic design. I would estimate it's resale value on E-Bay with one straight shaft at about $400 - $500.

His reply was that the cue in question does not have a Model # per se. He stated that from time to time he makes these simpler designs on an whim, as nice simple playing cues.

As for the value, he indicated that new, this model would go for ~$800.

If anyone's interested this cue is available. I'll be listing it on eBay later in the week.

Sorry to see it only went for $325. Sometimes E-Bay just doesn't deliver. I figured you would get at least $400 for it.

I just came across this thread on the "bump" today (obviously a little after the fact), but I gotta say...

For a guy who supposedly knows his cues well, Evan's average isn't too great. I tried to get the same info on the cue in my avatar, and got the same reply: It didn't really have a model#

Mine is a LTD, and I know for a fact that it had a model number when it was released. He might not remember it, or might not be able to find it, but it had one.

I saw my cue on the Schon web site years ago and fell in love with it. At the time I just couldn't afford it. I had the pictures save on my computer, and the files were named "Schon4--a, Schon 4--b" (I remember it started with a 4, but not the complete model#)

I used to carry prints of the pictures around in my case so I could drool on them as I saw fit, lol. I still have the prints (which is why I'm certain it's the same cue) but that computer I had the files on suffered a meltdown so I don't have the model #.

I wound up getting another chance at the cue last year and took advantage this time. Unfortunately, I have had no luck coming up with the model # since.

Evan got back to me pretty quickly, seemed like a nice enough guy, and other than the model# he was helpful, but it was....disappointing....to hear that it didn't have a model # when I know it did.

Seriously, maybe you'll get lucky like I did....I was just browsing on eBay and -BANG- there it was, ending in an hour no less. It was sitting at $800, but the reserve hadn't been met. I "had to have it" so I bid double that, bumping it all the way up to the reserve and ultimately winning it there. I still paid less than half what Evan says the cue is worth, and it was brand new & unchalked. I'm certain it was less than I would have spent if I got it when it first came out. As an added bonus, mine has leather (which I prefer) while the one on Schon's site had black/white speck linen.

Maybe you'll find yours one day too...

I prefer leather too. It would be cool to find it on eBay some day. I guess you never know!

No, but I think Schons are probably at the top of the list as far as production cues go. Brand new ones won't sell for anywhere near retail on eBay, but if you compare them to other production cues I don't think they're any worse.

A low end Schon generally seems to fetch more than most other low end production cues. Part of that is (IMO) they're a little overpriced to begin with, but part of it is that they hold their value relatively well.

If your STL 8 "retailed" for $840, and you paid that much, that was your mistake (I don't know that this is the case, and don't have time to investigate at the moment). No one is going to pay retail for a used cue, when they can get a brand new one for significantly less. I know I couldn't get close to retail value for my Schon, and it's a LTD--not one of the more readily available production cues.

As far as Evan's assessment of the cue's value, he's just like any other cuemaker. How many time have you seen an auction where it read "Mr So-and-so cuemaker says this cue is worth $2500," only to see the cue sell for half? They all dish out "retail" prices, but in reality no one pays that for a cue (unless perhaps you're having one custom built).

I'm paying "retail" for all of my cues, but then again I also helped to design/personalize all of the cues I have on order. Oh well, it's only money...lol.

You're also getting something that is "your very own" so to speak. If you buy a cue on the secondary market, that's not the case.

I paid far less for my Schon(used) and it was in great shape... And I would never pay more than half the retail price for any production cue... I do believe Schons are the best production cue out there... I just do not have faith in their resale value...

I agree with you on all counts here, but if you paid less than $420 for it I can't imagine you'd lose too much on the deal. I scan the cues on eBay pretty frequently and can't ever remember seeing a "used, but good condition" Schon sell for less than $300 (even the most basic model).

I did steal it... But just cause I find a good deal on a schon doesnt mean they are out their all the time... I look at Schons all the time, to see what they sell for on ebay... I eventualy want to buy an R sereise Schon... but I refuse to pay more than $500... I feel those are the only Schons that appreciate in value... And if they dont, I just want one for my collection... I am a new wanna be collector... Since I dont have much money, I thought I would collect vintage Players, CueTec, Brass on brass joint cues, and 4 piece cues w/ adjustable weight system... I will pay big money those, 5 pesos...
