Need an Idea

I have 2 poles in my basement by my table that occasionally I whack with the butt end of my stick from time to time. They are 3in. in diameter and approximately 8ft tall. I was looking for ways to cover them. I was looking at the foam insulation for copper pipes but couldnt find none with a 3in. diameter. I saw the fake wood wraps at Home Depot but they wouldnt cushion the blow if i were to hit them. Any ideas? Im sure im not the only person to run into this problem(literally).

Well here, they wrap them in thick rope. a nice nautical look!

How about cork. The strippers can get a good grip on that.
We had a western themed basement. My dad wrapped the teleposts with rope. Looks ok.
