Need for break cue?

It seems that all pros and nearly all regular amateur players have break cues these days. Watching the pros break on TV at the US Open and seeing the measured speed shown during Corey Duels break as low as 13 MPH I wonder if it is a real benefit. The controlled/softer break seems to be the prevalent form of breaking and cue tip wear or damage should occur no more rapidly than it does during play after the break. What is your opinion(s)?

At 13 MPH it wouldn't make much difference to the tip. A break cue still isn't a bad idea though. It might save your reg cue some dings. I know it would mine. Few players hit the balls that soft, keep in mind when you see that normally a Sardo is used or possibly the nine on the spot.

I will say those that like to hammer the ball and loose whitey have lots to learn.

if you rely on the "soft break" then you are just kidding yourself. you better learn to hit the balls hard. you dont necessarily have to hit them earth-shattering hard, but you better be able to hit them solid and control the cue ball somewhat. and if you are going to hit them hard, i believe you need a break cue.

Rodd is right with his assessment, regarding the Sardo Rack or placing the 9 ball on the spot. remember though, its easier to learn to hit them easy than it is to learn to hit them hard.

I've been breaking with my playing cue for a while now, but hesitate to hammer the break too hard to avoid the wear and tear on my playing cue. A break cue is on the top of my christmas list however.
