I was helping my gf's brother put together an 8ft pool table when i noticed that both short rails were very dead.

I checked to see if the were loose but then i discovered that the short rails were extremely hard. I was trying to compress the rail with my finger but it felt like it was made of rock.

Also some of the railing close to the pockets seem to be hard too.

I know new cushions is the way to go but...

Does anyone know any ways to remedy/temporary fix to this problem?

(the table was given to us by a neighbor)

How does this hardening occur?

There is no such thing as a temporary fix. The ONLY fix...is to replace all the cushions at the same time and start new.

Who is the maker of the table? The hardening started with, little blue pils mixed in with the rubber.LOL No seriously, there are alot of different things that could make this happen. The weather, humidity. It all depends where the table is. Most of the time it is because the rubber maker did not mix proper gum rubber and use addatives instead of using 100% gum rubber. Glen is correct. Buy some Artemis and put on the new rubber.
Thanks, Ron
