I'm going to visit some friends in Long Island City friday until sunday and will more than likely have a few hours to kill one of those days. Can anyone tell me what of if the poolhalls in Long Island City are like. I just want to go somewhere that I won't get killed or robbed to bang some balls around for a bit.

Thanks
Bora

You can go to Master Billiards (Sunnyside) located on Queens Boulevard and 39th Street or Racks Billiards (Ditmars) or Steinway Billiards (Astoria). Tonight would be a good night to go to Racks Billiards--it's their Monday night tournaments and you get a lot of sharp shooters there.

I'm staying at the La Quinta on Queens blvd. I think Masters Billiards must be near that correct? Do you know the crowd is like on friday night at Masters? Thanks for the information 9 Ball Girl

I could be wrong but isn't the La Quinta Inn the hotel across the street from Masters Billiards? It seems like there was a hotel behind a diner across the street. 9 ball girl, do you know if that's the one?

not killed or robbed?? hmmmmmmmmm

well that depends on when you go. if you're unfortunate enough, masters can get those "types" you're trying to avoid. i think "racks" is pretty safe. neighborhood is pleasant and rather residential.

That sounds about right. There was/is a La Quinta around the corner of 38th Street and Queens Blvd.

Yes, La Quinta is right across the boulevard to Master Billiards. I've not been there on a Friday in a while so I can't really tell you what it's like nowadays but when I was going, there was a lot of games going on. Check it out. It's literally a hop, skip, and a jump from where you're staying! :)

Timberly - you're correct
Eric - you too

You are almost across the street from Masters. Easy Commute. You will have to cab it to Racks, because the yellow line ends pretty far from the pool hall.

Your hotel is also very close to the 7 train, which will take you right into Manhattan (for normal touristy stuff). You can also get to Amsterdam Billiards (arguably the best pool hall in Manhattan) if you ride the 7 train to the end (42nd Street - Times Square) and catch the red line up to 72nd or 79th and walk over to 76th and Amsterdam. Total commute should be around 45 minutes to an hour. There is zero chance of getting mugged or beat-up at Amsterdam ;)

Further south you can hit corner billiards, Broadway billiards, and Slate Plus.

PM or post if you want more info on touristy type stuff or pool hall specifics.

Make sure everyone stops and looks at the christmas windows. My buddy that I going to visit for the weekend works for the company that does alot of the windows.

Thanks again

Masters will be across Queens Blvd. from the hotel you are staying out. Watch out for all the hustlers trying to get you to play with them. I used to live 3 blocks from there, this is where I first started shooting pool.

Spin City will be on 52nd Street and Queens Blvd. The hotel is on 38, 39th?
A good cold crisp walk of 13 blocks straight up Queens Blvd. will do you some good.

If you can find your way to Flushing (last stop on the 7 train) which again is right next to your hotel....you can go to Carom Cafe. Open 24 hours...lot of carom players but also have regular pool tables.

People have already mentioned Amsterdam Billiards...

Then there's Soho Billiards...in...you guess it...Soho, NYC. You can take the F train and get off at umm...I think Boradway Lafayette. You can find some action there.

There's also Corner's. 11th Street and 4th Avenue... Astor Place stop on the 6 train...or 8th Street stop on the N or R train...
I still live in Queens but I go all the way down into the city to play here....

There's like 2 to 3 Slates Billiards in NYC..one of them on 23rd and (6th or Broadway)...this room hosted the tournament that just passed....gosh..it's late can't think of it. But anyway, I wouldn't go there, I don't consider it a pool hall. It's all about loud music, the bar, etc.

Ok, that's got to be plenty for you to check out!!! Have fun...take care...

That would be the World Summit of Pool that later moved on to ESPN Zone.

Thanks again to all. This is my first trip back since 9/11 ( lost a relative in the Trade towers). I plan on spending more time this summer in the city. Which hall does Tony Robles play out of?

Well I stopped in a few times to Masters while I was in the city and like the place. I wanted to play on the snooker tables but my buddy was up for it. I will stop back again on my next trip back and play a bit longer next and maybe get a game. By the way if anyone was wondering the La Quinta was nice and for the price to be 2 minutes from my buddies house and 5 minutes from Manhattan it was perfect.

Thanks
Bora
