To continue with the Fast Eddie example. Sometimes his motivation was pure but he never got rid of his need to be validated by others. All throughout both movies he suffered when others did not put him on a pedestal. Even at the end his motivation for playing was to earn the respect from Vincent that he desperately wanted. His own opinion of himself mattered less to him than Vincent's opinion of him did. Like I said, Fast Eddie had moments of pure motivation but in the end he was back to his old self. The same guy that walked into Ames years before needing everyone to tell him how great he is.
