Negotiating With English

I have and can draw the c/b past the side on a spot shot. However that isn't the shot here as I see the angle. It appears more angle than a spot shot. The 8 may not even be a problem, it's had to tell using a diagram.

In DCP's case that much sure isn't an option. A slower shot without english may leave a cut but still is no bargin making the 4 and ending up with decent position.

An option I might try is a touch of low and carom off the 8 for better position. If it works fine, if not I still expect to see the 4. Then I can make a decision to shoot it or play safe. Weigh your options, if you can't handle the shot play safe.

I would go with the TXPoolnut safety....why shoot a harder shot than is necessary....
Very true but if the safe is just as hard as trying to make the shot and get shape on the four then give yourself the chance to win and go for it :D

I haven't gotten deep into the physics of what you discuss above, but on some shots it doesn't seem to hold exactly true. eg. You can play straight on shot with english and make the CB stop (or move just a little) while the OB deflects several inches from its path. So perhaps the net effect in resultant tangent angles don't always cancel out.

Another possibilty is that some swerving of the CB changes the angle to impact slightly. In the shot we're discussing, IE would make the CB come in from a slightly fuller angle.

That's been my experience, too. I don't know the exact details of the physics, but I can and do change the tangent line by using side. It seems to me, the fuller the hit, the more the effect....and with the cueball close to the object ball, soft speed helps it, too.

I mentioned this to Scott Lee at a lesson he gave me and he disagreed that the tangent line can be changed with side. He said just with cheating the pocket. However, I still use either/both methods successfully so reality wins. ;)
