Bar-box 8-ball sucks! I played in a race to 1 8-ball tournament tonight at a local tavern. Here are some of the things I witnessed.

1.) A player stroked 76 times over a ball and then proceeded to miss.

2.) Player A scratches. Player B retrieves the ball out of the return and asks
if it's "Ball in Hand". He's holding the cueball as he's asking.

3.) As I'm waiting to play someone in the finals, I watch 4 games that took
an hour and a half.

Then to top it off, I come home and turn on "Ballbreakers". I'd never seen it before...and I never will again. Some douch-bag was telling the announcer how he's a gambler/husler, then makes a complete fool of himself by playing a 3 ball combination with an open table. What a stupid show. I'm embarrased to be associated with this sport when that's all they can come up with.

Don't you just hate playing those people who tell you they put themselves through college playing pool and they can't make two balls in a row?

Rick,

people like that make me laugh,

I have heard some good ones before. one of the places i usta frequent held a Sunday and Monday free 9ball tournament, race to 4, loser breaks. It was for newbies.

Well i was practicing one day and this guy i had seen play in one of the tournaments was talking to a friend about how he played in the tournament and took 3rd in his first try. And word for word, he says " Man i must be the shit, first time playing and took 3rd "

I seriously wanted to turn and be like Shit is right, piece of shit.

At least he warned you Ha Ha.

But I found that person does not have to be great at pool to win money. He just has to pick his opponents properly. Like the guy who can't miss when sober but after you buy him two beers he can't make 1 ball.

8-ball is a great game. Just because beginners play it doesn't mean the game sucks. And just because beginners don't know all the things some of us here know, doesn't mean they're somehow less than us.

Why not treat players such as these beginners with a little respect and leadership and then see what happens? After all, they are putting money into the game!...and that's a good thing, right? Right?

How much did you get for winning the tournament?

Tap..Tap..Tap

We were all beginners at one time.
(although some of us tried not to make fools of ourselves too much :) )

I think you simply need to play better players. Bar box 8-ball can be a beautiful thing. I'll dig up an ancient post:

Great Bar Pool Tournament

Of course , snapping off the tournament makes it more pleasurable.

Bar table 8 ball is the bomb !! When played well, it is a thing of beauty. With most of the national tournaments being 8 ball, it is also the game you can win quite a few $ playing. Get used to it naysayers, it's here to stay! :D

I understand where you're coming from, but a couple of things to point out:
1 - No excuse, probably a bad player who's nervous.
2 - A Lot of bar tournaments are 'in the kitchen' instead of ball in hand. Perhaps the player was trying to clarify the rules.
3 - No Excuse, I hate that. Especially on nights when I'm not drinking.
4 - Ballbreakers - In some of the games, any miss is ball in hand for opponent, so sometimes it makes sense to try risky combos rather than runout.

Cheers,
Regas
