While playing in the local league last night,I found out that the pool hall I spend the majority of my free time at will be closed for 4-6 weeks. The reason:a leak in the roof caused a portion of it to collapse. I don't know how extensive the damage was but according to someone that was supposedly there when it happened,it was pretty bad. I would say the areas most damaged were about a quarter of the size of the whole place. No one was injured or killed fortunately. This sucks really bad for a number of reasons though.
First of all it is easily the best pool hall in a 20 mile radius. The tables, both 9' and barboxes, are extremely well kept, the owners, staff, and most of the patrons are extremely courteous, and the food is some of the best you will find in a pool hall. There is another pool hall in town with 9 footers and a snooker table, but the tables there are in horrible condition(with the exception of the snooker table, which is in fair condition),and there is no action to be found there. Maybe all the action will move there for the time being.
Secondly, all 8 or so APA teams will have to move to other crappy bars while repairs are being done. The place I'm thinking the teams will move to is a piece of crap IMO. The barboxes there play horrible, the drinks are overpriced($1.50 for a Coke in a glass!!!),and the owner doesn't do much to help the league.
Finally, the owners and employees might suffer if the owner of the building doesn't offer to repair the bar. The owners of the bar rent the building. From what I've heard, the second story is for storage and there has been a leak for a few months now,but the owner of the building has not done a damn thing about it. One of the areas damaged was the room with at least 7 video slot machines. I foresee a lawsuit in the future if reparations from the building owner. I can't help but think about the employees who wages might be lost. There are 3 employees who only work there. Hopefully insurance or some other relief will help cover their lost wages.
All in all it's a bad situation. I hope only the best comes out of the situation though.
