While playing in the local league last night,I found out that the pool hall I spend the majority of my free time at will be closed for 4-6 weeks. The reason:a leak in the roof caused a portion of it to collapse. I don't know how extensive the damage was but according to someone that was supposedly there when it happened,it was pretty bad. I would say the areas most damaged were about a quarter of the size of the whole place. No one was injured or killed fortunately. This sucks really bad for a number of reasons though.
First of all it is easily the best pool hall in a 20 mile radius. The tables, both 9' and barboxes, are extremely well kept, the owners, staff, and most of the patrons are extremely courteous, and the food is some of the best you will find in a pool hall. There is another pool hall in town with 9 footers and a snooker table, but the tables there are in horrible condition(with the exception of the snooker table, which is in fair condition),and there is no action to be found there. Maybe all the action will move there for the time being.
Secondly, all 8 or so APA teams will have to move to other crappy bars while repairs are being done. The place I'm thinking the teams will move to is a piece of crap IMO. The barboxes there play horrible, the drinks are overpriced($1.50 for a Coke in a glass!!!),and the owner doesn't do much to help the league.
Finally, the owners and employees might suffer if the owner of the building doesn't offer to repair the bar. The owners of the bar rent the building. From what I've heard, the second story is for storage and there has been a leak for a few months now,but the owner of the building has not done a damn thing about it. One of the areas damaged was the room with at least 7 video slot machines. I foresee a lawsuit in the future if reparations from the building owner. I can't help but think about the employees who wages might be lost. There are 3 employees who only work there. Hopefully insurance or some other relief will help cover their lost wages.
All in all it's a bad situation. I hope only the best comes out of the situation though.

I feel for you.. had a similar experience about 9 years ago. The room I played in, ran leagues in, worked part time in and also ran tournaments was affected by a fire next door.
All the damage was from the firefighters checking for smoldering fire in the rafters and a ton of smoke damage.

The room had great insurance and everything was covered. All new paint, ceiling tiles and a great scrubbing of all the concrete. New carpet and all the fixtures.

The room was closed for almost 3 months but the wait was worth it. It was like a refurbishment of the entire inside. All new cloth and rubber.

In the end all the players and owners were happy campers .. then PROGRES tore up the street out front and built a temporary bypass that almost killed the business and then PROGRESS passed the no smoking law and the place just closed.. no one came anymore.

A buck an half for soda isn't bad,I pay one seventy five for soda..regular beer will cost you three bucks a glass..shots are five an up. Wages an tax's..over head..I am usually out close to fifty dollars every league night..something to eat an drink times two..play my set/match..maybe by my opponent a drink..aiming fluid, don't you know.sorry to hear about your home game room..thank goodness no one was hurt..you'll be back to hit em at home thou..this is good.

lol you guys are hilarious....sodas here are around 2.25 or 2.50 and you DONT get free refills...its not just one place its everywhere...only a couple places give you FREE WATER its 1.50!!! other than that...it really sucks about your bar...im sorry

I feel for ya bud. We just got word that the room where we play and are sponsored out of will be closing the doors at the end of the month. The 26th is the last hurrah. Office space is at a premium here and thats what the room is going to be. Thats leaves us with one room for a city of 200K.
