New: a projection pool system with built-in vision

I just saw a new projection system that has a camera built in. This allows it to track the movement of the balls. I watched two players doing target pool on a table at a local pool hall. The scoring was automatic, since the system can see where the cue ball ends up relative to the target. I talked briefly to the developer and plan to get a complete demo soon. He is still developing several parts, so I would describe it as a beta version at this point. The company is about 15 minutes from me.

Check out the video at the start of their web page:

I can see that for person who teaches pool regularly--$3000 is a reasonable expense for this kind of capability. The projector/camera does a good job in setting scenarios and illustrating the physics and mechanics of each shot in a visually understandable way--and they are to be congratulated. If their system can teach lagging, kicks, banks, caroms even more--especially 3-rail and 5-rail kicks, 1-rail caroms, banks with english or different OB speeds.

However, I teach novices at the local pool bar this kind of stuff in roughly 5 minutes; generally for free, and never for more than 1 drink.

$3000 in lessons is going to do more then that system ever will.
Maybe, but people are already buying systems without the computer vision for around $1500. I think it makes the most sense for some kind of shared situation, such as the pool hall where I saw it. Scan a QR code next to the table and your phone becomes the controller. Another would be a full-time instructor with a dedicated teaching table.

With all of these projector systems, you can do about the same thing with a pack of donuts and some paper targets but some people really like the technology.

The video I saw had no sound and a few visuals. I’m guessing aiming is involved somewhere. If I’m wrong then here is more gibberish for some to read.

I’m looking at the tracks and what I’ve been using over 35 years for any shot on any table in any game. Pocketing, safety, breaking, jumps, etc.

Track in track out aiming.
I’ve written and described it on AZB for 20 years countless times to fall on deaf ears or smartass remarks.

I’ve learned and studied every aiming method from here to Uranus and back just to compare them.
A repetitive approach and stroke have been mentioned 1000000000 times.
Eye movement from cue ball to object ball another 1000000000 times.
Repetitive eye tracks are about as simple as it gets and I’ve yet to see it mentioned.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
Every shot with the cue ball is a straight shot and I’ll leave it at that.

I can teach it in 5 minutes, 3 minutes once I have the 4 red beam lasers set up.
It’s idiot proof once you know how to use it.
It requires zero brain power and of course bring your straight stroke.

The program could probably be a plus for some.

Unfortunately, I read that due to the quantum efficiency of the camera sensor, the black eight ball cannot be reliably distinguished from the purple four ball. So an orange five is right out! Only silly-colored balls will work.

According to a YouTube comment, it's $7,500. That one seems to have invested a lot into glitz development.

This new one includes a ring light so the camera and projector can be mounted right over the table.
Yeah when I was in the market for a projection training system, it seemed more gimmick then training tool. I wish this one that you posted would have been available a few years ago ;(
