New APA Scoring Question

So for anyone now using the new APA scoring system, notice any differences? Good or Bad?
I'm told we are to start after the first of the year. I was given paperwork and audited a couple of past sessions for a couple of divisions and there were a couple of significant changes. I'm curious if anyone has noticed much difference in any expected outcomes or was everything pretty much status quo?

It doesn't seem to be that big a deal to me.

Teams throw off more. Your lower skill level players are even more valuable now, since all they need to do to get at least one point is win one game, to get to the hill.

Otherwise, seems pretty much the same to me. I haven't changed my philosophy, I try to match up skill level wise most of the time, so it doesn't affect me much. (I'm looking for good matches for all concerned, and I especially want my newer players to have a chance. There will be enough times where they aren't matched evenly that they experience playing better players, which is important too.)

To be blunt, I don't think most teams really understand the purpose nor even care. They just play. I think it is an improved way of scoring. I don't think "throwing off" works as it can backfire. If they throw a 3 at your 7, somewhere in the match, it has to reverse itself in some way. A good 6 or 7 should generally be able to shut out a 2 or a 3 and win the points 3 - 0.

From my experience, most people in APA are there to enjoy the camaraderie of hanging out with friends and playing some friendly competitive pool. So all this doesn't matter. No matter what you're involved in, the 5% rule will always be in effect (approximately 5% of the population are A-holes). If you're stupid enough to get that caught up in APA Pool, I don't think you're smart enough to know how to accurately manipulate the new scoring system, match ups, etc..

the same could be said for bcapl, tap or ant handicap league for that matter.

actually bcapl league is the easiest to manipulate handicaps in.

we are in our 3rd session under the new soring system. during the regular session i match up my players like i always have " similar handicaps". during playoffs, tri cups or cities i try to match up where i believe i can get the most points, very seldom do i dump a lower player on a higher level opponent.

i do the same with timeouts. during regular session i never call timeouts but in playoffs etc i use every timeout available for each player.

during regular session we just relax and play, when playoffs etc come we get a lot more serious. as for using timeouts i look at it like this. if i see one of my players start to make a mistake i call a timeout. i am a firm believer in it is easier for me to call a timeout before they shoot to prevent them from getting in trouble than it is for them to shoot and then call a timeout for me to get them out of trouble.

APA Scoring

We are a few weeks into the second session of the new scoring. Gotta say I really don't like it. What I'm seeing across all the divisions is that the teams scoring the most EXTRA points are pulling away from everyone else if you look at the wins and losses remaining about the same as in the old system.
Why this is bad? It's about where most of the EXTRA points are awarded. When a couple of 2's or a couple of 3's play each other it is always a sweep or a hill-hill match, awarding someone the EXTRA point, When the middle rank players player each other it is an EXTRA point match about half the time. The higher ranks, rarely a sweep with a few hill-hill matches.
This places even more importance on those "novice" players which will encourage sandbagging or controlled matching up to hold them there for as long as you can.
I am also seeing way more offset match ups as teams try to steal an EXTRA point by getting a strong 3 to the hill against the 5's, 6's and strong 4's against the 7's. Maybe they even grab the win if the higher rank player is off or tightens up if they give up a game early.
