I know there is another thread discussing this which is old and very long. That thread largely deals with the black marks caused by the dye in the leather pockets of Diamond tables, but I have a GC5 with rubber pockets and was getting black marks as well.
Recently I replaced the spot on my table for a weekend ring game and noticed an increase in black spots on the balls. So I polished my measles ball, placed it on the spot and did the stroke test to the center diamond on the distatnt short rail. Wouldn't you know it. After a half dozen shots (of various spins) I had two brand new black spots on the cue ball.
I had been told repeatedly that the spots were caused by the pockets, that wasn't the case. Now when I think back there were always more spots on the one ball than any other ball. The other balls got spotted when shooting spot shots from the kitchen during ring games or from spot shot practice.
The pockets still may cause some spots but the major cause on my table is the Tefco Master Pressure Sensitive Spots. Needless to say I'm going to change brands.
If you have black mark problems check your spot and let us know if any other spots cause this.
Thanks
Jo
