Alright, long time listener, first time poster! I've got a question everyone if you don't mind. I've got an old table that's well over 100 years old. This thing has been redone at least 4 times that I know of and I'm getting ready to redo the cushions and felt. The last time I did it, I used titebond 2 wood glue. Mainly because a wood glue was used the time before that.
It's going on 20+ years and the cushions are dry rotted but the rubber was still fully adhered and I really had to get behind it and pull before I could get them to peel off. Now, I just want to know what the state of the art is now as I'm putting top of the line cushions and felt on the table and would like to get the most out of the table. For instance, outside of the adhesion itself, since I'm bonding solid wood rails to the canvas backed cushions, does the "hard" wood glue affect playability of the rubber where as the contact cement would be plyable? I've just heard of people who have sat on a rail to make a shot on a more modern table and the cushion letting go. Obviously making for not the quickest repair.
BTW, I've heard everything from "if it's worked, stick with it" to "we've only ever used contact cement so it must be the only thing anyone uses". And FYI, last time I used the wood glue I tacked the cushions in place until dry. Not sure if putting a tiny brand nail into the rubber (just until dry) could effect the cushions performance later on, but figured I'd give you all the info I could.
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Mark
