New England Information

Hello all! This may be a little odd, but I am looking for guidance/advice about the pool scene in the CT, NH, MA, VT area. I have always wanted to move to New England and am considering it currently. I want to move to a town that would have a great opportunity to advance my game (including a great women's amateur tour within a short traveling distance).....9 ball on 9 foot tables......after moving to Colorado from Texas, I found that there is a large pool scene here, but only on bar box tables......I don't want to make that mistake twice. If it helps a little more, to be a little more picky, I would love to find a medium sized town with a country-type atmosphere......any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Ct. and Mass. excellent pool. Lots of rooms and not to bad for action. Ct. is best for action. Lots of intermediate plays not afraid to step up to the plate. Some pro's. R I main room Snookers in Providence, lots of night clubs.

I haven't heard of any women's tournament in CT. I think if you want a womens' tour close to CT you need to find a place to live near New York. I go to New York, New Jersey and Maryland to see women play.

There's a good handicapped tour in CT and that seems to be where the women play. Check out Mass. There might be more happpening there but I haven't heard of it.

Right on the money Ken.
I was thinking of the Ct. Tour and the tri state has a good following for Womens pool. Plus we have some great teachers on the East Coast.

Hey Mike I'll see you Sat (and prob Sun too) over at Renaissance Billiards.

Will you have shop set up in the storefront like the last time?

Thank you to everyone that has responded so far....it helps quite a bit to get a feel for what is really out there......

"medium sized town with a country-type atmosphere" -- Well we have some of those up here in NH. Three pretty decent small cities that at one time or another have showed up very high (within the top three -- or higher!) of the 'most livable small cities in the US' over the last few years. That would be Manchester, Nashua, and Portsmouth, NH.

Portsmouth is an historic seacoast city with many 18th and early 19th C buildings that escaped demolition over the years mainly because the wealthy shipping merchants that originally thrived there really collapsed after the war of 1812 embargo and subsequent bigger ships that needed deeper harbors (like Boston). Portsmouth is a pretty good art and music community, has great restaurants, is definitely on the upscale end of housing cost, and is only about an hour from Boston. There are some pool leagues I think & league torunaments, but only one 'pool room', without much in the way of strong players, IMO.

Nashua is inland, right on the MA border, and at least twice the size of Portsmouth. There are 'upscale' rooms I believe, but no 'player oriented' rooms at this time. Lots of rooms just south of the border in MA however, and Boston itself is only a half hour away (unless it's rush hour!). Kind of an upscale bedroom community for the Boston area 'high tech' and defense industry.

Manchester is the state's biggest city (still only about 150,000 :) ), and more working class than either of the other two, but has really been coming into its own over the last five years or so, with more & better restaurants, more arts support, and the refurbishment of an impressive mass of giant old brick textile mills into offices, restaurants, service businesses etc. Manchester is a definite pool town too, but with a real twist -- most of the pool is in 'private social clubs' that you have to join. However, they are really cheap to join (maybe $20 a year), drinks are cheap, and they all seem to have two full size 9' tables -- fairly well maintained, that are FREE to play on!! They have both a 9-ball league (handicapped, mixed M&F), and their own pecular variation of golf on the pool table called 'Around the World'. The 'Around the World' pool league is over 50 years old! The social clubs are pretty working class, but generally very friendly :) -- if you are comfortable with that, you could thrive here.

All three of these cities are within an hour of Boston, too, which opens up all kinds of options...

No I don't work for the chamber of commerce :) :)

Thanks so much 1pocket.....your input is greatly appreciated.....you sure do make a great case for New Hampshire.... ;) I once played at the Boston Billiard Club (great place at the time) somewhere between Nashua and Manchester (I think) and loved the atmosphere.....it has been many years though......

Take care.

A great reason for me to move to the northeast would be to go to Foxwoods Resort. Looked sweet on the World Poker Tour. YEAHHHH!!!

Mike,

Looking forward to meeting you and I will have some work for you come Saturday evening.

Maybe Matt will have his Webb Sneaky Pete with him for some fine tuning as well.

Best regards,
Dave

Ny/nj

I think a great choice would be to try NJ. There central and south NJ are more "country like" but more importantly, there are a ton of tournaments for women. You have the JPNEWT tour which is in NY/NJ where alot of the new stars on the WPBA go through like Karen Corr, Julie Kelly, Dawn Hopkins, so on. Just about all competitive Pool around here is played on 9 ft table. There are alot of pool halls within a short drive. For that matter, there is a second womens regional tour with 2 hours drive; the CAT tour. Last but not least, there are alot of Pro's and instructors in the area and even local "unknown" talent is very strong.

You might try contacting Nadine Mazzola at Breakers Billiards in Woburn, MA. She is a former touring WPBA member and I would think she'd have a good handle on the women's scene in New England. Just a thought.

It is actually still there in Nashua. Nice place to play as are all the Boston Billiard clubs.

And if you're interested in coming as far "south" as Maryland, Virginia, we have the Planet-Pool 9 ball tour. NYC is just 3 1/2 hours away. We run about 16 events a year with a ladies division competing in Sunday only events. 9ft tables only. See http://www.planet-pool.com to get a flavor of the events.

Good luck.
Andy

You guys are just full of wonderful information....that is the good thing about New England, everything is within a few hours drive. I think anything within 5 hours from home is game and I would love to experience all of the tours to see which ones I like the best. In fact, plan to attend the CAT stop in early April, if possible.

Thanks again for all of your help.
