Me and a buddy were playing the other night and got bored playing 9ball (my fav) 8 ball (his fav) and a couple other games... We were really just practicing.. we made a hybrid game up that really turned out to be a lot of fun. very tough and turned out to be great practice for kicking, position and safeties.
it was a hybrid game of 8 & 9. We called it 98.
Some varition of this game probably exsists but I don't know about it so to us this was new.
Rules:
Rack a game of 8 ball.
the game is played like 8 ball but with alot of the 9ball rules.
Break. If a ball is made, the breaker chooses 1-7 (solids) or 9-15 (stripes)
the player at the table must pocket their balls in order sequencially as in nine ball (8 ball is effectively the 9 ball (winning ball) for each player.
rules are the same as in 9 ball, player must hit their object ball (and a ball must hit rail) first or ball in hand to the oppenent but ball BIH is behind the headstring unless the next ball the opponent must hit is also behind the head string in which case you take BIH behing the foot string.
carrom shot are ok as in 9ball but if you carom off your object ball and make a comepetitors ball play does not continue. pocketing an oppoents ball without pocketing one of your balls is a foul.
reasonably simple game but suprisingly very fun and it can be tough and extremely strategic, lots of safeties. We had a great time playing and it really makes you think.
give iot a try, let me know what you think. If you have any questions on other specifics to the rules let me know.
if it sound interesting but you think you have some other "tweaks" that could make it more interesting I'd love to hear them.
