New idea for the Winner-alternative break debate

We used to play a kind of ring game where you have to return the CB behind the "breaking line" ,a.k.a in the 1/3 part of the table from where you break, in order to keep breaking in the next rack. If you fail to do so, your opponent gets the break.

I think this is a pretty good rule to play 9-ball or 10-ball. You wanna keep breaking, you need to earn it.

Even more challenging alternative that I would love to watch at pro-level is: you have to return the CB behind the breaking line and then break from wherever the CB stop.

This way we keep on with the winner break format but the player will have to earn the break and a good position of the CB to execute the break. Also a lot more drama will be involved with missing the 9 when focusing on the CB position.

When I first read this I thought it was dumb, but after thinking about it, I actually like the pro version. Does someone really try a more difficult shot to keep the break going or do they just take the game and let the opponent break? It would also make people have to have skill breaking from several different positions. I like it.

Given the fact many tournaments are now allowing magic rack and allow players to rack for themselves, it's imperative to mess with the breaking order. The winner can't always break, not when they're racking in the same pattern and perfectly every time.

Your idea definitely addresses this somewhat. I think there are plenty of scenarios where players will need to consider if positioning the cue-ball in the kitchen is worth the risk of scratching while pocketing the 9.

That said, I'm always going to be in favor of loser breaks. That's really the only format that makes sense. Like football or basketball, after scoring, the opposition should be given the advantage.

Never thought of it that way. In some sport (hockey comes to mind), even after a goal, there is a faceoff to "decide" who starts with the puck...

Just sayin', I like it both ways (winner breaks/loser breaks). I think it's just one of the parameters of a game (like a run to what, where to break from, etc etc).

Each parameter will favor some players over others, it's just the way it is!
So varying the parameters is just perfect.

A long race to 100, winner breaks is really not the same as the mosconi cup format (race to 5).. But both event can be great event in my opinion!

Yes cracking idea. It adds a little 14:1 to the 9,10ball equation. Break from where you leave it behind the headstrong or concede your break to you opponent...
Eliminates so much BS from the break shot.
Who will be the first to roll this out at a major?

I like alternate breaks or loser breaks but winner breaks is a flawed way to do things, every player should have a right to be in a match and have a chance to shoot.

I had the same reaction...at first I was like this is a silly idea....but then I started thinking about the pro version and I actually do kinda like it and would like to see it in action just to see how well it works.
