New law in Ocala will hurt pool

The county commissioners here in Ocala have passed a new ordinance that is not setting well with the pool hall owners here.

Any establishment that serves alcohol will now be prevented (by law) from allowing people under 21 to enter the place.

This was aimed at Rave bars and nightclubs but it also applies to the pool rooms. Restaurants have been given an exception and can allow minors in although they also serve alcohol.

They already had a law prohibiting sales to people under 21, now they don't even want them in the place.

It sure will put a hurt in tournament play. Many players are under 21.

Can you imagine if they did this in the world of golf and because of this law they prevented Wei from participating. Every golf course I have been at serves alcohol.

Pool halls in my area are the same way, and people under 21 still go in there.

Why don't the rooms just start selling finger foods or micro foods. Thats how New Mexico pool rooms get around that issue.

How many rooms are in Ocala? The owners could take the tactic that some other bars, etc. are taking elsewhere with the smoking laws...since they have to live by others' irrational standards, some of these owners have gotten together and are now lobbying to have everyone else included in these laws. Imagine if the pool hall owners started lobbying for golf courses to be under this thumb.

Kind of ironic, isn't it?...people who originally opposed the laws are now lobbying for MORE of them. They are doing this, of course, to compete.

Thus, are the natural results of using hired guns to get what one wants: more lawlessness, more extortion, more violence, less liberty, less freedom to control one's own business, less choice for the consumers, etc.

Next stop for these control freaks: no smoking at home if children are there.

Why would you need a law for that. It seems logical to me not to smoke around children, much less your own! IMO

The anti-smoking zealots want to take away a person's right to smoke at home even if there aren't any children living there.

Hey don't ya know...

smoking stunts your growth...just look at me!

*smirks*

But seriously, I don't care to smell like a cig when I am out playing pool on league nights. It is just not healthy for me. I have enough bronchial problems as it is. I put up with it and deal I suppose, but it would be better not to have to deal with it from my perspective. Over in Brevard they have not done that yet...bars can still have smokers as long as there primary business is in booze.

Yes, but that is only one pool hall in Albuquerque that will allow people under 21 in because they don't serve achohol. And it's starting to become more like an amusment park instead of a pool hall.

These two relevant article popped up in my email today...I'm glad I don't live in Ocala or San Francisco...but I suppose I'm just "happy" to be in the middle of the herd as the lions run after us...

California: Outdoor smoking banned ... except for golfers!
San Francisco Chronicle

"Smokers, take heed: A new law is kicking your butts out of San
Francisco parks and open spaces. The Board of Supervisors voted 8-3
Tuesday to outlaw smoking outdoors in all recreational areas managed
by the city except for golf courses. That includes parks, squares,
gardens and playing fields but not federal lands such as the Presidio
or Ocean Beach. The ordinance wouldn't be the only one of its kind in
the state -- similar ones exist in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz and a dozen
other places -- but it would be the most comprehensive. 'Secondhand
smoke outdoors is just as dangerous (as indoors),' said Supervisor
Michela Alioto-Pier, who said she drafted the law out of concern for
the environment and children." (01/26/05)

Ocala, Florida: Schoolboys busted for violent drawings
Fox News

"Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away
from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick
figures. The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written
threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony. The
special education students used pencil and red crayon to draw
primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old
classmate being stabbed and hung, police said. ... The boy depicted in
the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the
school dean, Marty Clifford [who] called police, who arrested the boys
after consulting with the State Attorney's Office. They were also
suspended from school. One drawing showed the two boys standing on
either side of the other boy and 'holding knives pointed through' his
body, according to a police report." (01/26/05)

I have to agree with you on that. I play in southern NM and some pool rooms have turned into amusment parks. I wish there was a happy medium. There are some real good young players with the correct attitude. But some also have some kind of thug mentalitiy which is horrible for the game.
