New layered tips not ribboning on installation

Need some help here. Let me start by saying I keep my tips in a humidor until installation. I use a Mid Size Cuesmith lathe. Only use new Lenox Bi Metal blades for each install. Lately, my layered tips powder (for lack of a better term) when I shape them. Have any of you more experienced installers had this happen? If so, how did you try to correct this. Thanks for any help or insight you can provide. I won’t mention any manufacturer because I’ve had it happen with more than one tip provider.

I’m no master of the craft but I can suggest using a wet sponge to moisten the surface of the leather in between cuts and cut just below center using a blade rest.

might put this in 'ask a cuemaker' section. how fast are you running the lathe? could be a little fast.

Thanks for the replies. I run the lathe at its lowest speed (is this a possible problem?) and great idea about wetting the leather as I cut. I’ll give that a try. Thanks for the help.

This is what the Black Tips mostly do. It comes from the tanning on that type of tip. I do also agree with the other suggestions.
