New member with a cue question

Hi All,
First post here. I was recently gifted this cue. It’s a new Viking Q series cue from 1997/98. I changed the tip from the lepro that was on it to a Moori medium. My previous cue is a Pure X with a low deflection shaft. The Viking cue makes a much different noise and on extreme English shot it makes sort of a hallow noise. Do you think the sound is coming from just the simple maple shaft this cue probably has? Or do you think I just need to get used it?

I was looking at other shafts, predator or kielwood etc etc. something with a smaller tip 12.5 or similar. The cue is 13mm.

Anyway, any advise would be appreciate.
Thanks!

The "noise" could be coming from a number of different things. Only the process of elimination will lead to what it is.
tip
ferrule
something loose somewhere in the cue that only shows up on certain shots
I've chased some noises in cues to the point where you begin to think it's between your ears!

Or it just could be a characteristic of said cue that makes a specific unnatural noise.

I had a cue quite a few years ago that did what sounds like your cue. It came with Sumo tips that were very hard. Center ball hits were louder than I preferred, but not bad. Off center hits, though, sounded like I was hitting the cue ball with a piece of steel. The first thing I did was change the tip to a Moori medium and that helped but still didn't quite get me to where I wanted to be. So I had the ferrule changed and that took care of it.

The original ferrule was LBM and I had it changed to ivory. People can argue about tip and ferrule hardnesses and things like that all day. And I understand that ivory is a pretty dang hard material. But in my experience, ivory ferrules provide great feedback with less noise than many other materials. Having said that, I've played with other cues that have LBM ferrules and they hit great with no weird noises. So a lot of time, I'd say most times, there are more factors than just the tip and ferrule.

The Pure X has a kamui black soft tip.

I’m thinking this shaft is probably just a maple shaft and not really a LD shaft
In the op it says that the pure-x has a low deflection shaft. That mixed with the soft kamui would make it significantly quieter, imo.

A standard maple shaft with a harder tip will make a different noise.

I play with standard maple shafts and triangle or le pros. They have kind of a ping type sound when hitting extreme english. Not as loud as a break cue or something.

Maybe try a soft on it?

If you bounce the cue off your hand and don't hear any strange sounds or rattles the cue is most likely fine.

Ok cool. Ya I guess a ping sound is what I’m hearing. It’s definitely higher pitched than when I hit a standard center ball shot.

Seems like maybe I just play with it for a while and get used to it.

I’ll need to find a cue-smith near me to help me investigate. I do feel like I’m getting used to the noise. I also believe that even though the noise is odd on extreme english shots I don’t think it’s impacting the shot. If you know what I mean.

A metal screw in the ferrule? Do other companies use a similar setup? Do you have a figure or photo of the Viking ferrule?
This picture was on here years ago. Think it's a 10/24 thread. It's like a modified version of the Paradise/Palmer ferrules. I never actually cared eneogh about it to take a photo. I just change the shaft over.
